The official tasks of the created structure were to identify asteroids and other objects that threaten to collide with the Earth, as well as prepare for taking measures necessary to repel such threats. In addition, the new structure is responsible for coordinating all protective actions between FEMA, the Pentagon and the US government.
Organizationally, the new Planetary Defense Department is part of the Planetary Science Directorate and the main directorate of NASA's Science Mission in Washington, and Lindley Johnson, who previously headed NASA's Earth Objects Tracking Program, has been appointed the Bureau's Chief Specialist (Planetary Defense Officer).
Finally, NEOWISE, NASA's infrared space telescope, launched into low-Earth orbit on December 14, 2009, was assigned to the newly formed bureau as the main scientific tool. The main task of NEOWISE is a complete survey of the sky in four infrared ranges in search of such objects as: ultra-bright infrared galaxies, brown dwarfs, asteroids and comets approaching the Earth.
The news about the establishment of this bureau for space defense, even in the official filing, looked very ambiguous, since it was not very clear: what are the brown dwarfs threatening the Earth with? Why an infrared telescope for tracking asteroids? What does “asteroids and other objects” mean? What are these “other objects”?
Thus, the NASA initiative, on the one hand, strongly influenced the nerves of the conspiracy public awaiting the arrival of the Apocalypse, on the other hand, added fuel to the fire of the discussion on Nibiru. However, after two years, Nibiru did not appear, the asteroid did not collapse to Earth, and everyone forgot about this bureau, remembering only the FBI from other American bureaus.
However, on October 16, 2018, the famous American blogger and publicist Michael Snyder accidentally dug up another big news in the US media. It turns out that “against the backdrop of growing concern that humanity is completely unprepared for an unlikely, but still unthinkable asteroid impact with the death of millions,” the current White House Administration proposed to increase the budget of the Planetary Defense Coordination Bureau from 60 (approximately) to 150 million US dollars.
