This is only the third case in 20 years - the mollusk is very rare

A slug about 10 cm long was found in her well by a resident of Brest … The

woman showed the strange creature to zoologists. They decided: in her well, a woman caught a giant slug, or in scientific terms Limax maximus. And not the largest yet - their length reaches 20 centimeters!

Viktor Demyanchik, a specialist at the Polesie Agrarian-Ecological Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, explained: this is a rare species of mollusks, found only in Western Europe. In memory of Viktor Demyanchik, who has been observing the nature of the Brest region for 20 years, this is the third case. The last time Limax maximus was caught in the regional center was 2 years ago, BelTA writes.

The paucity of Limax maximus is explained by the peculiarities of its lifestyle: giant slugs like very high humidity and winter with freezing temperatures. They feed on fruits and vegetables, with special preference given to fallen cracked grapes.

For wintering they need a cellar or a compost heap. For this reason, these individuals are practically not found in the wild. So, according to the expert, the mollusk climbed into the well in search of shelter from the coming cold weather.

Outwardly, Limax maximus resembles ordinary mushroom slugs - an oblong body with a spotted skin, thick and slippery, no eyes or mouth are visible, the head is, as it were, covered with a hood, which moves when pressed. The giant slug can live for over 10 years, breathes with the lungs.
