A resident of the Indian city of Palwal, Haryana state, swallowed a 20-centimeter knife and after that survived - doctors for three hours removed a dangerous instrument from the patient's liver. This is reported by The Tribune.
In early June, during the self-isolation regime introduced due to the coronavirus, the man wanted to eat a knife. “He tried to chew it, and ended up swallowing the cutlery with water,” the doctors said. It is specified that this person suffers from a mental disorder and uses drugs.
After a while, problems began - the man could not eat normally, as there were severe abdominal pains and fever. The victim was hospitalized in a local hospital, after which he was urgently transferred to a medical facility in Delhi.
Using ultrasound and computed tomography, doctors established the exact position of the knife: the blade pierced the liver, and the handle was stuck in the duodenum. As a result, bleeding began, the formation of an abscess in the liver and sepsis.
“The knife could easily pierce the esophagus and enter the trachea, heart, or touch the vessels on the way from the mouth to the liver through the duodenum. We looked for similar cases in the specialized literature, but swallowing such large knives was not reported,”said Nihar Ranjan Dash, professor of gastrointestinal surgery at the Indian Institute of Medical Sciences.
It is noted that a tube was inserted into the patient's liver, which sucked out 100 milliliters of pus for five days. The man was fed intravenously, as he could not feed on his own. “Now his life is out of danger,” said Dash. - He is conscious and can walk. He is provided with psychiatric help."
