Scientist of the Ural Federal University (UrFU) Alexei Melkikh proposed an alternative to Darwinism - this is the theory of directed evolution, the university reported on Tuesday.

“The evolution of life is determined not by spontaneous natural selection, but by the processes of quantum mechanics in the cell nucleus - exactly according to this principle, the interaction of the“building blocks”of proteins and DNA takes place. This theory of directed evolution was put forward by Aleksey Melkikh, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, lecturer at the Ural Federal University,”the statement says.

The scientist is developing theoretical and physical and mathematical models of evolutionary changes, which are an alternative to the well-known Darwin's theory. The scientist spoke about his research at the conference "Development of Life: Issues of Evolution and Development of Organisms", held in Yerevan.

“For about 20 years I have been building the theory of directed evolution, which I am convinced will replace Darwinism. The main question that Darwin's theory, including such modern versions of it as extended synthesis, cannot solve, is the question of the emergence of complex living systems in the process of evolution. How did such complex organisms arise, the number of genomic states of which cannot be enumerated during the lifetime of the Universe? - the words of Alexey Melkikh are given in the message.

Directed evolution theory is based on three key principles. The first is that evolution is a priori directed, that is, there is a priori information in accordance with which directed changes in genes occur. In the process of directed evolution, selection and random mutations play a secondary role.

“Only the existence of a priori orientation allows us to explain the characteristic times of evolution. Since the number of variants of information molecules (DNA) grows exponentially with the growth of the length of such a molecule, when the number of nucleotides becomes more than 102-103, a simple enumeration of the sequence variants becomes impossible during the lifetime of the Universe,”the scientist emphasized.
