Many people know that poltergeist in German means “noisy spirit”. Before scientists became interested in this phenomenon, it was called evil spirits, the tricks of ghosts, bustle, bastards, etc. No one sees the perpetrators of the outrageous behavior, so it would be more correct to classify the poltergeist as a ghost.
In 1878, the Theed family, who lived in the Canadian town of Amherst, became a victim of a poltergeist. One night, the homeowner's daughter Esther, 19, jumped out of bed screaming that a mouse had ducked into it! The search for the troublemaker was not crowned with success, but a rustle began to be heard from the box where Esther's ribbons lay. Of course, nothing was found in the box, except for tapes. Four days later, the girl woke up because someone tore off her blanket and threw it into the corner of the room!
The next day a doctor was called in to see Esther. When he examined the girl, a roller jumped out from under her head and hit the doctor on the torso! On the next visit to the doctor, a pile of potatoes that had come from nowhere spilled out. News of the strange phenomena in Amherst appeared on the pages of Canadian newspapers. As a result, the "enchanted" house was visited by Priest Clay. Together with the doctor, they came to the conclusion that the phenomena taking place in the house were caused by Esther herself, who "was electrocuted and turned into a kind of living electrical battery."

On his first visit to Esther, the doctor suddenly heard a metallic rattle, and an inscription appeared on the wall, written only by a madman: “Esther! You belong to me and I will kill you! Later, Esther complained to the priest that she had heard a voice promising … to burn down the house! And after it sounded, lighted matches fell on the girl's bed, an invisible hand tore off the dress from the hook, crumpled it up and put it under the bed. There it caught fire!
Since then, fires began to occur here and there in the house. Wandering theater actor Walter Hubbel promised to help. But what he saw and heard so amazed the actor that he described in detail what had happened in a special notebook: “Someone next to me moved from place to place, then collected old newspapers in a heap and set them on fire! I had to keep buckets of water ready for several days."

End of the story with Esther
He turned out to be happy. Esther got married and left for another city. The poltergeist stopped visiting the house of the Thede family and finally left the exhausted household in peace. It was assumed that the reason for the events described was the girl's suppression of her emotions that had flared up due to age. This hypothesis is confirmed by Esther's marriage, after which her misadventures also ceased.
