This summer, the most striking decoration of the night sky was the comet Neowise, which leaves a trail of two tails at once. The first tail is blue and consists of gas and ions. The second tail is golden and made of comet dust. It was discovered on March 27, 2020, and is named after the telescope that discovered it. Astronomers call it the brightest comet in the past seven years. Due to its "photogenic" and observable, Neowise has been captured in a variety of professional and amateur photographs. It is perfectly visible even against the backdrop of city landscapes, and we offer you to admire the best views of the heavenly wanderer.
You can also see the comet with the naked eye on the territory of Russia. Unless in the north of our country it will not be seen very well because of the effect of the white nights. You need to look to the north-west, the constellation Ursa Major, which is well recognized in the night sky, will become an excellent landmark. The comet should show off just below and to the right of the "bottom" of the bucket. On July 23, Neowise will approach the Earth at the shortest distance - 103.5 million kilometers will separate us from the beautiful comet. This is slightly more than half the distance from us to the Sun.
Astronomers strongly advise against delaying observations. First, every day the comet becomes dimmer, because it moves away from the Sun, which illuminates it. And secondly, the next time Neowise will return to our region only after 6800 years.
