There are people who are small, and there are also very big people. The former are sometimes laughed at, and the latter are respected and feared. But there was one person in history who happened to be both a dwarf and a giant at the same time. His name was Adam Rainer, and he was a resident of Austria.

He was born in 1899 and died in 1950. Little is known about his life, but there is evidence that his parents had quite normal growth for that time. At the age of 15, he himself was only 131 cm tall.

In 1914, when he was just 15 years old, the First World War began. Reiner really wanted to serve, but due to his height he was not accepted. A year later, he again wished to sign up for the front, but he was again refused, although he grew a few centimeters. Three years later, he, again adding in height, again asked to join the army, but was again refused.

At the same time, Rainer was an unusual dwarf. Since childhood, despite his small stature, he had long arms and large legs. At 19, he wore size 43 shoes, which even today is considered large enough for men; and his legs continued to grow.

But after 26 years, something strange happened to him. His whole body began to grow rapidly, and after a few years the doctors diagnosed him with gigantism. At 32, his height was already 218 cm. Doctors became interested in a strange phenomenon and examined Reiner.

The culprit was a tumor in the brain, in the pituitary gland, which caused an increased release of hormones, which led to gigantism. It just remained unclear why Rainer was a dwarf at first. The doctors removed the tumor, and later it continued to grow, but very slowly.

Naturally, his great growth caused him a lot of problems. Not only did he have disproportionate body parts (arms, legs, lips), but his spine was also severely curved, which made him soon unable to walk. Now he was constantly in bed. Gradually he went blind in one eye and deaf in one ear. Rainer died in 1950; he was cremated, but where the ashes are buried is unknown. At death, his height was 234 cm.

Despite the active interest of scientists and doctors, Reiner's riddle remained unsolved. Neither before nor after Rainer had anyone with such an anomaly.
