In the Bermuda Triangle, found a cargo ship that disappeared 100 years ago. Scientists believe that this is the SS Cotopaxi steamer, whose route lay from South Carolina to Cuba. The Devil's Triangle has long been called a paranormal place where strange things happen: ships and aircraft disappear. What the found ship is known for and what the urban legend says about the triangle in the Sargasso Sea.

Is it a Cotopaxi?

Last week, marine archaeologists and researchers found the cargo ship SS Cotopaxi, which went missing almost 100 years ago in the Bermuda Triangle - 65 kilometers off the coast of the US state of Florida. The find was reported to the grandson of William Myers, who was the captain of the Cotopaxi. He confirmed that this is the same ship that his grandfather commanded.

There are other arguments in favor of the fact that the steamer found at the bottom is the Cotopaxi. The evidence was a valve found nearby and boilers that were similar in size and length to those of Cotopaxi.

The researchers also studied the documents of the court cases that were brought against the owner of Cotopaxi, Clinchfield Navigation. The families of the deceased sailors in claims argued that the steamer was not adapted to the harsh oceanic conditions. The president of the company denied everything and said that it was not Cotopaxi that was to blame, but a severe storm. In his notes, the businessman indicated the last coordinates of the steamer - the ship was 65 kilometers from the place where the wreckage was found.

These arguments assured the scientists that the ship found at the bottom was a Cotopaxi. But this is not the only lost floating craft. At the very beginning of the First World War, the submarine HMAS AE-1 disappeared from the radars in the Bermuda Triangle area. Found her recently.

Troubled steamer

SS Cotopaxi did not last long in the US Navy, but was built very quickly. The idea to create a dry cargo ship appeared in August 1918, and in November of the same year it was launched.

During its short life, Cotopaxi has been in two (not counting the fatal shipwreck) scrapes. While serving on the Shipping Board, the ship was severely damaged when it ran aground off the coast of Brazil in 1919. The Cotopaxi was walking through the Bragança Canal and got stuck due to its weight. The crew had to dump 400 tons of coal - only after that the ship arrived at the local port. Cotopaxi's body and engines were badly damaged. The renovation cost almost 200 thousand dollars (at 1919 prices).

The owners no longer needed such a steamer, so it was sold to Clinchfield for $ 375,000. But this company was also not lucky with the "damned" ship. In 1920, while on a coal cargo voyage from Charleston and Havana, Cotopaxi collided with the tugboat Saturno, which sank instantly. The court found both ships equally guilty of the incident.

The last and already fatal incident occurred in December 1925. On November 29 SS Cotopaxi started from Charleston. There was coal on board, as well as a crew of 32. Already on December 1, the steamer gave a distress signal - the message said that the ship lay on its side and gained water during a tropical storm. On December 31, the ship was officially declared lost. People of that time associated this event with the fact that it was "swallowed" by the forces of the Bermuda Triangle.

Steven Spielberg's 1977 film Close Encounters of the Third Degree mentions Cotopaxi. In the tape, the ship is associated with the legend of the Bermuda Triangle.

If you thought that ships and other vessels disappear only in the seas and oceans, you were wrong. The tiny lake hid the fastest ship of the 19th century.

The mystery of the Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda Triangle is also called the Devil's. It is located in the Sargasso Sea. The area is bounded by a triangle with the tops of Miami, Bermuda and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

It is about this territory that there are legends - they say that the triangle "absorbs" ships, ships, planes passing and flying through the zone.

The most famous case in the Devil's Triangle is the disappearance of an entire link of American aircraft ("Link 19"). On December 5, 1945, five Avenger-class torpedo bombers took off from the US Navy base in Fort Lauderdale and never returned. No wreckage was found.

The weather forecast for the entire flight was favorable, the aircraft route was standard - all its points had visual navigational cues that minimized the probability of error, and the aircraft crews were experienced as well. In search of "Link 19" went 300 aircraft of the army and navy, as well as 21 ships. For several weeks, rescuers searched for the missing planes, but to no avail.

After that, three theories emerged. The official version is that one of the pilots is to blame for confusing their own location; conspiracy - they concealed the true purpose of Flight 19 from people; paranormal - the Bermuda Triangle "killed" the crew.

But there are still a lot of mysteries in the world. Read about the spirits of Roanoke Island - a colony where all people just disappeared.

Explanation of the phenomenon

There are several versions of why technology is disappearing in the Bermuda Triangle. Along with completely insane types, aliens abduct earthlings in order to conduct experiments, there are also adequate ones. It is worth remembering that the area is an area with a very difficult navigation: there are many shoals, cyclones and storms often arise. And a realistic explanation is much more terrifying than a mythical one, because nature and the world around us are more ruthless than ghosts, aliens and curses.

Methane emissions

Methane can break down at the bottom of the sea. Because of this, large bubbles, saturated with methane, form in the water. They are so dense that ships cannot keep afloat and instantly sink. There is also an assumption that methane, rising, can "shoot down" aircraft - also due to a decrease in air density, which leads to a decrease in lift and distortion of instrument readings. This version has the right to exist, because scientists have proven that methane can actually sink ships.

Killer waves

There is a version that some ships are sinking due to "killer waves", or "wandering waves". These are huge (30 meters) single waves, whose behavior is different from usual. For a long time, such waves were considered a fairy tale, but on January 1, 1995, a wave of 25.6 meters was noticed on the Droper oil platform, near Norway. Such waves can literally be called a wall of water that is capable of overturning ships.

It is this version that is the most reliable for scientists.

Infrasound

Under certain conditions, infrasound can be generated in the world. He has such an effect on a person that he begins to panic and hallucinations appear - this is due to damage to the nervous system (in particular the brain), endocrine system organs and internal organs due to the appearance of tissue hypoxia.

Infrasound is also called one of the possible reasons for the appearance of "flying Dutchmen" - ships abandoned by the crew on the high seas for no apparent reason.
