Cemeteries unwittingly evoke unpleasant and strange feelings on the living. One of the graves in a cemetery in Norfolk, England, is especially terrifying.

After all, they say about her that she tried to twist, turning the tombstone over to get rid of the one who is buried in it. Gravestones are often displaced in cemeteries where the soil is shaky. Often the gravestone tilts, and the reason for this may be that the coffin tree underneath is rotten and collapsed.

Sometimes the gravestone changes position due to overgrown tree roots or underground water flows. But in one cemetery in Swoffham, the tombstone turned exactly 90 degrees, which can hardly be explained by tree roots or an underground river.

In the summer of 1981, Fredrik Sandell, who was the priest of the church near which the cemetery was located, reported the incident to the Daily Press, and they published an article about the event. According to the article, the mysterious event was that a stone cross in the cemetery was suddenly turned over. When the cemetery was reorganized to allow for easier maintenance, several of the old graves were lined up.

But one of the gravestones decided to move of its own accord. It was about the grave of Miss Ella Morse, who died in 1852 at the age of 37. The white stone cross has rotated 90 degrees to be exactly north and south, while the other gravestones and crosses remain in the same position. It was found out that Ella Morse was the daughter of John Morse, a local brewer. He paid a huge amount of money to install a stained glass window in the church in memory of his daughter.

It looks like the unfortunate Ella was loved by her family, but the reason for such expensive gifts could have been something else. She might well have been insane when she died, or the family was thus trying to cleanse her of the terrible sin she had committed. There are no signs to indicate that she was a witch. But the inscription on her gravestone resembles the words that were uttered during the burial of witches in order to protect themselves from their evil ghosts: "With the Cross and the Passions of the Lord, be calm in death and may the Lord have mercy on you." There are other theories about why the cross could have moved. It may not have originally belonged to Ella and was accidentally rearranged when the cemetery was being reorganized. Perhaps in this way the cross tried to move away from the body under it. There were also skeptics who arguedthat there must be some rational explanation for what happened, but nothing better than someone unrolling the cross on purpose, they could not offer. The riddle will forever remain unsolved. Soon after the article was published, several vandals came to the cemetery, tried to return the cross to its normal position, but in the process they split it into many pieces.
