One way or another, the cemetery is a priori shrouded in mysticism from which legends are formed, and even more so on famous necropolises.

Today we will tell you some of them, based on the works of Yu. V. Ryabinin "The Mysticism of Moscow Cemeteries".

As a matter of principle, as has already been written many times, for the majority the cemetery is not the best place for walking, but where, if not in a cemetery, one can best learn about history …

Let's start with ghosts.

The grave of Sergei Alexandrovich Yesenin (1895-1925) is located at the Vagankovskoye cemetery. It is thanks to the fact that Yesenin is buried here that this site has become one of the most visited in the cemetery. There are always people standing there. And quite often someone reads poetry. It is known that Galina Besnislavskaya committed suicide at the poet's grave. Workers at the Vagankovo cemetery claim that her ghost still walks around the area.

But at the Danilovskoye cemetery you can meet your double-ghost, which is essentially a bad sign, but miracles are happening here: the most visited not only at the Danilovskoye cemetery, but throughout Moscow in the last years of the 20th century was the modest grave of Matryona Dmitrievna Nikonova (1885 –1952) - the Blessed Eldress Matrona, named at one time by John of Kronstadt "the eighth pillar of Russia" and recently canonized. Every day, and especially on holidays, dozens, hundreds of pilgrims gathered at the grave to mourn the mother, ask for her intercession and take from the grave a handful of sand, which, according to many, has miraculous properties. In general, several books have already been collected about the miracles that happened through prayers to Metrona Matrona, including those right at the grave! In 1998, the venerable relics of the newly glorified saint were exhumed and transferred to the Intercession Monastery, where they are now. But pilgrims go to the place of her former burial at the Danilovskoye cemetery and invariably take away a handful of sand from here. Candles are constantly burning there and prayer is constantly heard.

A very terrible story happened with the exhumation of the remains of the writer N. V. Gogol: The most incredible tales are still circulating about Gogol's death, his repose and reburial. It is said, for example, that Gogol himself warned in advance not to rush to bury him when he is at peace: this, de, will not yet be death. And only when there are clear signs of the absence of life in the body - the corresponding color and smell - only then will it be possible to bury it. But even in this case, - as Gogol allegedly instructed, - an outlet with a view must certainly be taken out of the tomb: well, when the deceased comes to his senses there with God's help, he will cheer up, then he will open the view and breathe fresh air for himself, until help arrives. But the negligent executors did not heed these teachings of the classic. And as soon as Gogol closed his eyes, he was immediately buried. Without any precautions, of course, in case of resurrection. When, eighty years later, his grave was opened, they found Nikolai Vasilyevich … lying on his side. Confirmed, it turns out, his fears.

Mysticism sweeps over the Vvedenskoye (also known as the Basurmansk crypts or the German cemetery) cemetery. They say that at night or at dusk here you can see the silhouettes of ghosts, hear foreign speech, the sound of shackles and music. There is a chapel in this cemetery, on the walls of which you can see many wishes. According to legends, if you write a wish on the wall, it will come true. And no matter how hard the administration tries to paint over the inscriptions, they appear again.

The sad legend is connected with the story of the spouses Leon and Sophia Plo, buried in the same grave. Once the husband suspected that his mistress was secretly meeting with her lover. Leon ordered a stone carver to represent a half-dressed woman sneaking out on a date. When the composition was ready, the husband came home and killed first his wife, and then himself. The sculpture was installed as a tombstone.

There are interesting stories connected with the churches located on the territory of cemeteries, for example, at the very entrance to the Preobrazhenskoye cemetery there is a tall black chapel with a blue hemispherical dome and an eight-pointed cross on it. This crypt chapel is all made of granite. There is no information about who is buried here, but according to some sources it is a memorial-crypt of the Guchkov family. Its restoration was recently completed: the cross was restored, the defects of the walls were eliminated, the fence was renewed.

The Church of Saints Seraphim of Sarov and Anna Kashinskaya at the Donskoy cemetery is famous for the fact that in the 1920s the building of the church was rebuilt and the first Moscow crematorium was located there.

In 1992, the temple was returned to the revived Donskoy stauropegic monastery.

At the end I would like to cite another excerpt from Ryabinin's book: "Whether we like it or not, the cemetery occupies one of the most important places in our life. A person may never visit a theater, a museum, a library, a park of culture, a restaurant, but he will certainly visit the cemetery more than once."
