There is a small river on the west coast of Lake Winnipeg (Canada), and on one side of that river is a small cemetery.

It is lost in the damp swampy ground and no one has visited the graves here for more than a century. And the graves themselves are nameless and have long been hidden in the thick marsh grass.

Once upon a time there was also a small house on the territory of the cemetery, but now only a destroyed stone foundation remains of it. And next to it is a pole with a sign "Nes Cemetary" and there is a sculpture of an angel.

In 1875, the townships of Manitoba, Riverton and Gimli, were home to a flood of Icelandic settlers. These immigrants built wooden houses on the shores of Lake Winnipeg and began their new lives in this relatively unspoiled piece of wilderness.

At the same time, the settlers first drove out of these places the local groups of the indigenous population that had existed on this land for tens of thousands of years. In addition, they brought smallpox with them and the Indians who did not have immunity to it died out as whole tribes.

Icelanders also perished from smallpox, and it was during these years that the Nes cemetery was founded, where the victims of smallpox were first buried. There were so many dead that they did not make any tombstones, they simply installed a wooden block.

By 1880, the cemetery was already full and there was no room for new graves. And 10 years later, the first victim of the Nes cemetery appeared. A man named Magnus Hellgrimsson built his house right in the cemetery and even mockingly gave him the name Nastrond, which translates as "House of Corpses".

In 1890, Magnus died of an unknown illness and he died long and painfully, as if someone was taking revenge on him for mocking the dead. His widow was so scared that after the death of her husband she could no longer live in this house and it was abandoned. It is its foundation that can now be seen among the overgrown grass.

Local photographer and writer Christine Loff spent a lot of time exploring the place and collecting local legends. According to her, the entire area of the cemetery itself and next to it are life-threatening.

The cemetery is currently off limits and technically closed. There is not even a normal road there, the only road is essentially just a track in the middle of the field. And if someone wants to shorten the path and go across the field, then with a high probability they will get stuck in a swamp or break a leg on one of the bumps.

Loff says that she visited the cemetery several times and each time it left her very unpleasant. At the same time, she herself did not see anything abnormal, but she collected a collection of stories from local residents.

It is said that one boy was walking along a swamp near the cemetery and suddenly heard a voice calling him "into the house." The voice tried to persuade the child and kept repeating “Why don't you want to go into the house? Enter the house … enter the house … ". Fortunately, the boy found the strength to resist the call and ran away in horror.

Not far from the field with the cemetery, there is a separate farm, in which people still live. They say that strange lights are often seen from the side of the overgrown cemetery.

And one curious researcher somehow secretly entered the cemetery and then spoke with fear about a black translucent silhouette that came out of the foundation of the house and headed in its direction. The researcher prudently did not wait for him to come, but ran away.

In recent years, the nearby swamp has become more and more flooding the territory of the cemetery. And every time after the next spring flood, people find the washed up skeletal remains of those once buried in this place.

One of the local residents, Gilbert Guttormsson, annually collects in the field, where he grazes his cows, the remains of the deceased and then buries them on a site on a hill. Also, from time to time, the authorities send people to do the reburial of the remains of Nes at the Riverton Cemetery.

In recent years, stories of mysterious singing voices luring lonely travelers have begun to appear more and more often. The voices sing so beautifully and sweetly that it takes a lot of effort not to go this way.

However, as soon as a person finds himself in the tall grass on the territory of the swamp, as one wrong step and he is immersed in rotten viscous water. So far, no one has died here, but there are many who are firmly stuck in the swamp.

In general, the entire area of the coast of Lake Winnipeg seems to be filled with anomalous places. Here, unusual lights are often seen in the sky, and the ghost of a girl can also be found on the shore of the lake. From afar, she seems to be an ordinary person, but when someone approached her closer, she literally disappeared into thin air.
