Geologists from the Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø have figured out the rate of ice melting in Europe. The "great flood" is referred to in their Quaternary Science Reviews article.
Henry Patton is one of the leading scientists in this study. He spoke about the results of the work done. Modeling showed that about 13-15 thousand years ago, the Eurasian ice sheet lost at least 750 cubic kilometers of ice annually, sometimes reaching a colossal mark of 3000 cubic kilometers. In this era, dubbed by scientists "the era of catastrophic growth No. 1", the melting of glaciers in Eurasia has sharply increased the sea level by 2.5 meters.
The era of the Pliocene-Quaternary glaciation was wider, during which glaciers periodically advanced and retreated. It began about 3 million years ago. The periods of the onset of glaciers are usually called "ice ages", and the retreat - "interglacial periods" associated with warming on the planet. The last such period began about 12-15 thousand years ago and continues to this day.
As computer models of the Earth showed, the melting of glaciers significantly changed the picture - the peninsula of Great Britain separated and became an island, the North, Baltic and White Seas were formed, “mega-rivers” flowed in France - huge waterways that transported twice as much water as the current Amazon. After a few thousand years, they slowed down their current, but the melting of the polar cap still does not stop. Scientists hope to use models to figure out how the world might change in the future.
