The Italian astrophysicist and archaeoastronomer Giulio Magli concluded that the location of the burial tombs (pyramids) of ancient China, in which the emperors were buried, is associated with the North Pole of the world, where the alpha Ursa Minor is currently located. The sides of the pyramids, built at different times, are oriented in different ways, which is the reason for the precession of the earth's axis. This is reported by Science Alert.

For some Chinese rulers, including Qin Shi Huang, the strict orientation of the burial tombs to the cardinal points was a symbol of greatness. For this, the builders of the pyramids used the location of the Sun and the constellations to find the direction to the South Pole of the world - the point of the celestial sphere around which the stars rotate daily. At Shihuang Ti, who ruled from 246 to 210 BC, the location of the tomb coincided with the north-south line. Emperor Gao-tzu (who ruled from 202-195 BC) had a pyramid tilted by several degrees.

Mali divided the burial tombs into two main classes. Some deviated from the north-south line by less than one degree, others - by 8-14 degrees. According to the scientist, the reason for this discrepancy is precession, when the earth's axis changes its direction in space, as a result of which various stars appear at the poles of the world. Several thousand years ago, the North Pole of the world was not the alpha Ursa Minor (called the Pole Star), but another polar star - Cohab or beta Ursa Minor.

Mali believes that some emperors decided not to place the pyramids in the direction of the south, but to demonstrate a connection with the Kohab, who had already left the North Pole of the world, which for a long time was considered a symbol of imperial power.
