British archaeologists excavating south Wales have discovered several previously unknown Neolithic structures. They unearthed the remains of stone pyramids that were built about 4500 years ago.

According to Wales Online, Neolithic stone pyramids have been discovered in the Svchelin Valley. They are located next to a Neolithic settlement that archaeologists excavated in 2015.

One of the pyramids was built at the top of a hill. Its length exceeded 20 meters and its width was about 12 meters. What was its height is difficult to say now.

Moreover, one of its walls was not straight. This suggests that the pyramid was a kind of dome that hid something underneath. Perhaps there was a burial here, but archaeologists have not yet found traces of it.

"The cairn we found here was built about 4,500 years ago," said research team member Ian Fewings. "It could probably have been used as a burial place for one of the leaders or chiefs of this particular group of people."

Geophysical surveys and 3D surveys from drones were also carried out on site. The lidar image of the area helped to reveal another large structure, and it was oval in shape. According to researchers, in ancient times, these structures were painted in bright white.

The analysis also showed that the pyramids were older than the above-mentioned Neolithic settlement. Perhaps, when the stones lost their white color and faded over time, local residents began to take them to build their houses, walls and other structures.
