A truly sensational find was made by a group of American and Italian scientists in central Italy. In one of the wine cellars of the city of Orvieto, a staircase was found leading down.

The above ground pyramids of the Etruscans were found earlier, but this was the first underground pyramid.

The excavations were carried out by David George and Claudio Bizzari. They noticed a very strange feature of the walls of the underground structure, which had a significant slope, which, with the further continuation of the line, suggested the shape of the structure in the form of a classical Pyramid.

After the soil layers dating back to the 20th century were removed, as well as the floor of a medieval building, archaeologists began to excavate a layer that was simply overflowing with Attic ceramics from the 5th century BC and ceramics with Etruscan ornaments. After that, scientists stumbled upon a layer that was deliberately poured to hide the lower levels. This is evidenced by the flights of stairs that go into the ground.

But where they lead is unknown. Most likely to the tombs. In addition, an outgoing tunnel was discovered there, which most likely leads to other underground pyramids.

According to preliminary analyzes, this building was dug more than 4,500 years ago. It was this period of time that is considered the heyday of the mysterious state of Etruria, which occupied such modern provinces as: Tuscany, Lazio, Umbria and Emilia-Romagna. The general existence of the state is about 1,000 years.

This state had an extremely high level of development, but during the heyday of the Roman Empire it was absorbed and then completely destroyed.

For 200 years, starting from 300 BC, the Roman Empire completely destroyed Etrusia. No written artifacts or even traces of language remained of this mysterious people. The only legacy is the ornate graves and short epitaphs inscribed on them.

Scientists have high hopes for the discovered pyramids, perhaps they will become the starting point for deciphering the mysterious Etruscan people.
