American scientists from the Cincinnati Children's Medical Center and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia have found that antibiotics can increase the risk of pneumonia in newborns. The researchers published their findings in the journal Science Translation Medicine.

Studies in a mouse model (mice used to study human diseases) have shown that in order for newly born animals to develop immunity, an interaction between the dendritic cells of the intestine and the bacteria that make up the normal microflora is necessary. This leads to the fact that lymphoid cells begin to penetrate into the mucous membrane of the lungs, which protect newborns from bacterial pneumonia.

It turned out that antibiotics prevent bacteria from entering the intestines, as a result of which their presentation by dendritic cells does not occur. This leads to the fact that lymphoid cells do not form a defense against pathogenic bacteria that attack the respiratory system.

According to scientists, these data show that antibiotics contribute to the risk of death of newborns from microorganisms that cause pneumonia. In addition, it is possible that asthma is also associated with antibacterial drugs in those people who do not have a genetic predisposition to it.
