Research by journalists from the Associated Press showed that AI detected the large-scale spread of the coronavirus before humans. However, the system underestimated the scale of the consequences of this event.

Associated Press reporters decided to find out when the AI-based global alert systems first recorded coronavirus signals. Their study found that the first warning of the virus outside of China came from the automated HealthMap at Boston Children's Hospital, which scans news and social media posts for messages about the spread of the disease.

On December 30 at 11:12 pm local time, the system sent an alert for unidentified pneumonia cases in Wuhan, but rated them 3 out of 5 as serious. It took several days before HealthMap researchers "realized the severity of the outbreak."

The AI has generated a report that China's Weibo is actively discussing the Wuhan Health Agency's notification of an "unexplained pneumonia outbreak." Only then did the deputy head of the ProMed information system, Marjorie Pollack, instruct her team to investigate. The analysis showed that the coronavirus warning was sent out much later than the AI did.

Reporters concluded that artificial intelligence systems can already scan data from news, social media and government reports for early warning signs of a virus outbreak, and then notify professionals from agencies such as the World Health Organization. However, research by AI scientists at the same time shows that they should not take responsibility for public health policy.
