Video: The Rise of AI 2024, April

After the real boom in artificial intelligence, tech companies and researchers are making us believe that AI is the solution to all problems. This is a real breakthrough and practically "happiness to everyone and everyone." However, not everyone shares this position. For example, Jared Moore, Ethics Advisor at the School of Computer Science at the University of Washington, recently argued that AI is not created to make our life better with you.

Why AI is bad

In order to understand this issue, let's turn to history. Then we will understand that such statements are far from new. For example, in his 2012 book The Master Switch, modern history researcher Tim Wu argues that in the early days of television, many people thought it was meant to change the world by making information free and accessible. In the 90s, television centers were supposed to occupy an educational niche in developing countries. As a result, we all know what television has become today. A more recent example is our beloved Internet. Here everything developed in approximately the same way.

Likewise, according to the scientist, the statement that "AI was created for the common good" ignores the fact that technology, when it is not aimed at the root of the problem, only distracts our attention from what really matters. On the one hand, it seems clear that AI will make things better. It will create new types of jobs, take automation to a new level, and so on. Solid idyll.

Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and many other AI developers suggest that health, energy, or crime prevention work alone is a good enough argument in favor of AI. At the same time, some of the developments that were created through AI could well do without them. It would be even cheaper.

Moreover, claims of only the benefits of artificial intelligence are indeed extremely similar to what happened to television and the Internet. Yes, now we are actively using these benefits of civilization, but by and large they have turned into tools for making money for you and me for large corporations. Is this the future we want for ourselves? And is this how we envision the future side-by-side with AI? Hardly.
