What do we know about the Moscow metro? For most of us, this is just a means of transportation. Meanwhile, diggers who regularly descend into mines and subway tunnels, as well as researchers of paranormal phenomena, are convinced that there, deep underground, is hidden a whole world living by its own laws. This is how eerie myths are born.
The horrors of the subway
During the laying of the metro tunnel from Herzen Street to Kalininsky Avenue, the ruins of the oprichnina palace of Ivan the Terrible were discovered. According to legend, the courtyard of this building, which stood behind the Kremlin walls, was strewn with a thick layer of river sand so that the blood of people who were tortured and tortured there would go into the sand.
The Metrostroy brigade was sent to help archaeologists. Soon workers began to complain that during the excavation process they had to fiddle with the fetid red mud, which was difficult to wash off.
In addition, the participants in the excavation began to suffer from nightmares. And during the day while working, some had hallucinations. It was as if they heard human groans, screams, and curses coming from underground. Legend has it that one day three workers built a rack out of a subway trolley and began to cruelly torture two student trainees on it. As a result of the torture, both victims died. After that, an order was given to stop excavations.
Another time, while laying the Taganskaya station, in front of the eyes of the workers, a foreman of the metro builders stumbled and fell into the elevator shaft. They immediately descended to the bottom of the mine, but below … there was no one.
The brigadier's body was found only three days later at the end of a distant tunnel. There were no injuries or injuries on the corpse, but it seemed that all the blood was simply pumped out of the body. This case was allegedly even reported in the then press.

Stations on churchyards
According to the head of the Association "Ecology of the Unknown" Alexander Semyonov, many stations of the Moscow metro were built on burial sites and this can have a negative impact on people.
So, on the territory of the Sokol station at the beginning of the last century there were mass graves of soldiers who died in the First World War, and later a training ground was set up there, where political prisoners were shot. Metro employees say that at the station they sometimes feel someone's invisible gaze on them. And some see transparent silhouettes of naked people with festering wounds scurrying along the platform.
An old cemetery is located near the Vladykino station. Night linemen who find themselves on this line sometimes hear someone's drawn-out howl.
Lineman
One of the most famous ghosts living on the subway is the Phantom of the Lineman. According to the dispatcher of the Sokolnicheskaya line, Valentina Abaeva, during his lifetime, this person really worked as a lineman for 40 years. He died at the age of 82, but even after his death everything returns "to work". Metro employees seem to have seen a ghost in the darkness of the tunnels more than once.
Black machinist
About a quarter of a century ago, such a story happened. The train went off the rails, the head car caught fire. The driver managed to get the train out of the tunnel, but three days later he died in the hospital from severe burns. However, the driver's family was not paid any compensation for the death of the breadwinner: the authorities said that he himself was to blame for the accident, although the train cars were in disrepair.
After that, metro workers began to meet in the tunnels the ghost of the deceased driver. The phantom is said to resemble a person with black, burnt skin. Probably, the soul of the unfortunate will not find peace in any way due to the fact that they have been treated unfairly.
Bunker Teens
There is also a ghost story. According to some reports, somewhere in the area of the station "Chistye Prudy" there is one of the Stalinist bunkers. The legend says: to build it, a team of 15-16-year-old teenagers - orphans and street children - was specially recruited. After the completion of construction, no one saw them again. Maybe the unfortunates were killed, or maybe starved to death. Most likely, the authorities were not interested in the information about the bunker coming out. They say that two of the doomed managed to get out through the pipes to the top. And the rest remained in the dungeon. Today, the ghosts of young workers continue to roam the metro tunnels.
Ghost train
Another legend tells of an empty train, without passengers, which appears every month after midnight on the Circle Line. At each station he makes stops, but does not open the doors. In the driver's cab, you can see a man in a uniform worn by metro workers in the 1930s, when the metro was just introduced in the capital.
The ring was built mainly by prisoners. Their working conditions were terribly difficult, and accidents were frequent. The corpses of the dead, as well as those who dared to conflict with the authorities, were simply thrown into ventilation shafts, or even walled up in the walls of the tunnels. Their souls remained forever attached to these places.
Some eyewitnesses claim that sometimes the doors of the train do open at the station. But this is a trap: it is better not even to approach the ghost train, otherwise you can be sucked into another dimension.
But, of course, all of these stories should not be taken too seriously. All this is just part of the capital's folklore.
