Rozenburg is a small port city and former municipality in the west of the Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. After the Second World War, the port of Rosenburg developed rapidly from the Nieuwe Maas river towards the sea. To cope with the growing sea freight traffic, a new shipping canal was built in the late 1960s, parallel to the existing Nieuwe Waterweg.

The Caland canal, named after the Dutch civil engineer who built the Nieuwe-Waterweg, served heavy draft vessels such as the ever-increasing bulk carriers and tankers that sailed towards Europoort. However, as ships grew in size, the wide canal soon became difficult to navigate in high winds, particularly near the Calandbrug Bridge.

In the mid-1980s, architect Martin Strujis and artist Frans de Wit were tasked with creating an effective yet good looking wind barrier. The result of their work was the Rozenburg Windwall.

The Rosenburg Windwall looks like a large-scale landscaping installation and consists of 125 individual concrete slabs installed and fabricated to a specific pattern. They are 1.75 kilometers long and reduce wind strength by 75%. In the southern part of the canal, slabs are made in the form of semicircles - 18 meters wide and 25 meters long. However, closer to the Kalandbrug bridge, the girths of the semicircular formations of the Wind Wall decrease, and each wall is closer to the others. Near the bridge, the width of the walls is only 4 meters. In the north, the walls, the semicircular slabs are replaced by cubic slabs measuring 10 meters, which are located on an embankment 15 meters high, which generally makes it possible to reach the same 25 meters as in the other sections. The barrier retains this shape until the very end, where the gas storage is located among the trees.
