Even some thirty years ago, collecting small figurines was very fashionable. And many remember that there were several such figures in the sideboards. But times have passed and fashion has faded. But in England of the Victorian era, there was a real cult of death. Many people in England were addicted to death. It was then that the great bestsellers were written about serial killers and death in particular. And if our grandmothers collected little porcelain ballerinas, then in those days it was considered fashionable to have in their collection several figurines of maniacs or figurines dedicated to this bloody theme. Moreover, the bloodier the characters or actions were, the more valuable the figures were. Also appreciated were the sets of figures where the bloody scenes were played out.
How the Boy Scout built a nuclear reactor
What a man obsessed with an idea is not capable of. So in the town of Clinton, Michigan, there lived a simple boy named David Khan. It was in the nineties of the last century. The boy was a scout and was very interested in atomic energy. In addition, the boy was fascinated by chemistry. He even made several explosions, after which his mother drove him to do experiments in a shed in the backyard. When the guy turned seventeen, he firmly decided to build a nuclear reactor and receive the highest scout award "Sign of the Eagle".
In an atmosphere of the strictest secrecy, he began the extraction of radioactive materials. He disassembled fire detectors from which he extracted some radioactive substances, he also bought a thousand lamps from an army store from which he got thorium-232, and from an old watch he was able to get radium-226. But even this was not enough for him. Pretending to be a professor, he was able to write out the materials that closed laboratories could get. As a result, he managed to create something like a reactor. The radiation was so strong that a whole block fell into the contaminated zone.
In 1994, the guy was caught stealing wheels. During the search, his reactor was found. The panic began. I had to connect the federal service for the control of radioactive materials. The FBI, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the US Department of Energy, and the Environmental Protection Agency joined the case. As a result, sixty thousand dollars had to be spent to localize the radioactive contamination and take the homemade reactor to the repository. Of course, we had to wait to receive the scout award.
