And although summer hikes in magnificent Iceland are still a long way off, one can recall the amazing phenomenon of this country even now - there are no mosquitoes here. Why? Nobody knows for sure.
There are no mosquitoes either in Iceland or on the Faroe Islands, although in neighboring countries these small and numerous bloodsuckers feel quite at ease. What keeps them out of these "forbidden territories"? Some scientists argue that Iceland's oceanic climate is to blame. But here is what entomologist Erling Olafsson thinks about this:
All this is nonsense, since the oceanic climate is observed in many countries where mosquitoes live and breed quietly. And the harsh winter has nothing to do with it, in Russian Siberia conditions are even more terrible, and there are more than enough mosquitoes. I would assume that this was due to the special chemical composition of the soil, and therefore the water of Iceland. But, I emphasize, this is again my opinion, which may well be erroneous. Nevertheless, mosquitoes, which could have been brought here even by the wind, for some reason do not take root in Iceland. And it's great!
And although the absence of mosquitoes in this country remains the greatest natural mystery, which scientists have never figured out, tourists are very pleased with this state of affairs, since you can travel around Iceland and the Faroe Islands without fear of these little bloodsuckers, from which no modern means help. including tight clothing. Therefore, hiking and camping here is a pleasure, and the beauty of this region is simply amazing. Beauty without mosquitoes! Like in the movies…
