Many people know about the region in Turkey, Cappadocia, that it is famous for its underground catacombs. The most famous and large-scale ones are in Derinkuyu:

It is a multi-level underground city that descends through passages and rooms to groundwater. It turns out that someone was hiding here. But local residents could not quickly build all this and prepare for hostile actions of someone. According to officially recognized information, there is such an explanation:
