The source of natural gas in Iraq, known as the Eternal Flame, has been burning continuously for over 4,000 years and is mentioned by Herodotus, Plutarch, and in the Old Testament Book of Daniel.

Iraq is home to many biblical and religious sites. One of the most striking, can rightfully be considered a continuously burning gas fire called Baba Gurgur, which is located near Kirkuk in northern Iraq.

The Kurdish name translates as "Father of the Eternal Flame", otherwise known as "Eternal Flame". This seems to be the most appropriate name because the fire has been burning for over 4,000 years.

This oil field held the title of the largest oil field in the world until 1948, before the Ghawar oil field in Saudi Arabia took over the palm.

This fire appears to be what the book of Daniel calls a fiery furnace in which King Nebuchadnezzar, the king who ruled Babylon from 605 to 562 BCE. e., abandoned three Jews for abandoning his golden idolatry.

For centuries, it was believed that shepherds used fire to warm their herds of livestock during the cold winter months.

In more recent history, the now dying Faith caused the fire to become symbolic for the Kurdish women, who prayed to the fire, invoking forces outside to give them a boy.

Thanks to the understanding of modern science, we now know that the flames are caused by natural gas seeping through cracks in the rocks in this area.
