A plane crash over the famous plateau in Peru killed seven tourists who wanted to see the mysterious geoglyphs from a bird's eye view
A light-engine Cessna plane crashed over the world-famous Nazca plateau in Peru. The accident killed seven people, including one child.
It is known that the victims were tourists (three citizens of Chile and four citizens of Peru) who went to look at the mysterious drawings on the plateau - the so-called geoglyphs - from a bird's eye view (otherwise it is almost impossible to assess their scale and amazing geometric pattern).
The police have not yet named the reasons for the accident. The local press notes that this is not the first time such a tragedy occurs over ancient images, the purpose of which scientists have not yet been able to find out.
The geoglyphs of the Nazca plateau are Peru's main landmark after Machu Picchu, the legendary capital of the Incas. Since the normal view of the images is only available from an airplane, accidents are not uncommon here. The last time less than two years ago, a plane crashed here with five French tourists on board. Such events over the mysterious drawings could not but cause rumors and legends about their sinister role in such disasters.
The famous Nazca Risks, the ceremonial city of Cahuachi and the striking system of underground aqueducts that still function today were created between 300 BC. and 800 A. D.
The Nazca lines are grooves 20 cm deep, which depict animal figures and sometimes reach sizes of almost 500 m in length (hummingbird, monkey, fish, and others).
The Nazca geoglyphs are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. However, even international organizations are powerless against natural forces that can erase ancient patterns on the rocks - the greatest danger is posed by heavy downpours that erode the rock.
