Frost. It's hard to go outside. It's getting colder: -30 ° C, -40 ° C. Maybe colder. CHP plants start to fail. Residential buildings, schools, kindergartens are left without heat. Cars do not start, public transport stops, people are gradually seized by fear and panic.

All of the above is similar, however, such scenarios were seriously discussed in the development of climate weapons. A volcanic eruption, tsunami or hurricane can do more damage than an atomic bomb. And most importantly, it is almost impossible to prove the involvement of the human factor in these events. Perhaps this is why climate weapons are still one of the most secret and under-covered chapters in military history.

Forbidden Weapons

Vietnam, 1971. Suddenly, a military aircraft appears in the sky and sprays a pale yellow powder. A few hours later, a downpour hits the jungle, it continues for several days and nights. Water erodes the soil, it becomes impossible to pass through the jungle.

But this is no longer a fairy tale, but a reality. The plane is American, and the powder is silver iodide, which causes condensation and, as a result, heavy rains. During the Vietnam War, the Yankees decided to flood the famous Ho Chi Minh trail with rains, for which they sprayed almost five and a half thousand tons of silver iodide and lead iodide over the jungle. As a result, the amount of precipitation tripled, and the rains destroyed not only the trail itself, but also the rice fields.

It is not known how the experiments with rains would have ended if in 1977 the UN had not signed the convention “On the prohibition of the use of any hostile use of means of influence on the environment”. From that day on, scientists began to disguise military developments as meteorological observations. And also the study of the ionosphere.

Legends of HAARP

The terrible Moscow heat of 2010 is still remembered by many with shudder. Wildfires have turned the capital into a ghost town covered in thick smog. Well the street was literally impossible to get out. Later, Roshydromet said that there had not been such a hot summer in Russia at least since the time of Prince Rurik. The heat and fires resulted in significant economic and environmental damage. And all the fault is a powerful anticyclone, which blocked the movement of air masses. But where did it come from?

And here the media recalled the existence of a secret American complex HAARP - High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program or "Program for the study of auroras by high-frequency exposure." The abnormal heat was the result of the tests of this complex, some journalists and bloggers assured. The "Kharpovtsy" themselves, of course, denied everything, claiming that the purpose of the program was to study the northern lights and other natural phenomena.

True, the Russian military has a different point of view. As the reserve colonel, who wished to remain anonymous, told "Utr", HAARP was originally created precisely as a climate weapon. “By sending high-frequency radiation into the ionosphere, they were supposed to cause fires and other natural disasters in the enemy's territory,” the source said. "Besides, there was such a task - to disable enemy warheads."

In general, we must admit that the Russian fires are not the only thing the American complex was accused of. In the same 2010, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said that HAARP caused an earthquake in Haiti, which claimed the lives of more than two hundred thousand people. And two years later, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, right from the UN rostrum, accused the enemies of destroying rain clouds on the approaches to the country's borders. It is not hard to guess who the politician was angry with. And although most of the world publications considered these statements unfounded and populist, as you know, there is no smoke without fire.

Amid a wave of criticism and rumors, the United States decides to close the expensive project. However, the complex was never dismantled and, who knows, it may still send high-frequency waves into the ionosphere.

Ahead of the whole planet

It would seem that with their HAARP, the Americans can frighten the rest of the world with impunity. However, the Soviet Union had something to answer, and long before the appearance of the American complex. The prototype of HAARP was the Soviet "Sura" located in the Nizhny Novgorod region. With its electromagnetic radiation, the station can "heat" the ionosphere at an altitude of up to 300 kilometers. Although the Sura is about three times less powerful than HAARP, this did not stop the American meteorologist Scott Stephens from accusing the Russians of artificially creating Hurricane Katrina, which swept across the United States in 2005. However, these statements cause only laughter among scientists. As Saveliy Grach, an employee of the station, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, said in an interview with Nakanune.ru, “the energy that we bring into the atmosphere is so scanty, that it is impossible to start any irreversible process … militarily, such attitudes are more of a defensive nature."

For a long time, the "Duga", a Soviet over-the-horizon radar station, was also secret. In 1986, with the light hand of the American writer Tom Bearden, she became known as the "Russian Woodpecker". In his book, the author argues that a special knock, transmitted at frequencies from three to thirty megahertz, creates an invisible electromagnetic network over the United States, due to which Americans fall into depression. And when the war starts, the Soviet Union will allegedly let a special current through its network, causing tornadoes and tsunamis. But if you believe the official version, "Duga" was primarily supposed to detect launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles, and at a very early stage. By the way, the scale of the station still boggles the imagination - the height of its antennas reaches 150 meters.

Cloud gel

In the United States, other developments have been underway for a long time - not only by influencing the ionosphere. So, the American company Dyn-O-Matt produces pellets that dry out storm clouds. Polymers, falling into rain clouds, increase 1.5 thousand times and turn into gel. Company President Peter Cordani even conducted his own experiment in the summer of 2001. When a thunderstorm broke out in Palm Beach, Florida, he loaded the plane with $ 40,000 worth of pellets and dropped them on a cloud. The Associated Press quotes air traffic controller Kevin Sullivan, who "saw with my own eyes how a large thundercloud suddenly disappeared into thin air."

Pavel Konstantinov, a senior lecturer at the Department of Meteorology and Climatology of the Geographical Faculty of Moscow State University, a meteorological scientist, knows firsthand about such experiments. In an interview with the Internet publication Pravda.ru, he talked about the events of the mid-90s. XX century, in which he was. According to the scientist, “then our specialists signed a contract with one of the countries of the Middle East and, within the framework of this contract, presented them with the technology of 'decanting' the rain. This is the same as the notorious "dispersal of clouds" - in the rain clouds the substance dissipates, the crystals of which serve as nuclei of condensation of water vapor, that is, they cause rain exactly where it should fall. And now this country began to successfully siege precipitation over its territory, and its neighbors, whose crops depended on the same air masses, no longer got a drop. As a result, those began to have crop failures and all this resulted in a real international scandal with a bunch of lawsuits that were brought against us as well. Since then, we have become more cautious about the dissemination of such technologies on the foreign market,”Pavel Konstantinov recalled.
