1 - Potemkin pit

The Potemkin Yama was located on the site of the current Gagarin Avenue (near the Melrose cafe). According to Potemkin's idea, it was supposed to become a huge pool. It was planned that he would provide water to the upland part of the city. After the sudden death of the prince, work on the construction of the reservoir was stopped.

Over time, the pit turned into an ordinary swamp, which also constantly grew due to the shaky ground. People have repeatedly fallen into it (especially visiting guests who are not familiar with the topography of the city), children and even cattle have fallen. Usually the victims broke their necks and backs. Today it is a student district with many cafes and hostels. But according to local residents, in the area of house # 5 late at night one can see strange translucent silhouettes and hear strange whispers. They say that the souls of those who died in the pit wander.

3 - Teacher's house on the street on March 8

At the corner of 8 March and Dontsova streets, there is an old mansion. It was built in the summer of 1910. And they did it in an incredibly short time - 5 months. Even by modern building codes, this is very fast. The building literally grew out of nowhere. And this is taking into account the constant problems with the soil and flooding, because of which the previous owner did not dare to build anything in 2 years.

The luxurious mansion was built by State Councilor Nikolai Papchinsky at his own expense. Initially, he wanted to live in this house with his family, but then abruptly changed his mind and even agreed to redevelopment in order to rent the house to the Teachers' Institute. There is one curious legend that explains such a drastic change in Papchinsky's plans. Allegedly, the state councilor was interested in antiques and all kinds of curiosities from the countries of the East and Egypt. It was rumored that he secretly bought out a scarab figurine, which was part of a small collection of the former Yekaterinoslav governor Andrei Fabre.

The Fabre collection was notorious. The mummy was considered enchanted, but the scarab figurine, on the contrary, was supposed to bring good luck. Whether it is true or not, it is unknown, but soon the purchase, Papchinsky was able to complete the construction of the house in record time. Then he almost lost the mansion at cards, after which he decided to take it out of harm's way for 3 years to the Teachers' Institute.

It is believed that the "magic scarab" is still hidden somewhere in the basement of the house.

4 - Holy Trinity Cathedral

There are many legends about the Holy Trinity Cathedral. At city forums, eyewitnesses say that in the evenings candles and icons move independently in it, and you can also feel the presence of an unknown force. But these are far from the strangest things that happened to the cathedral. On the site of the cathedral even before the construction of Yekaterinoslav, according to legend, there was "Bald Mountain", where the witches' sabbaths were probably arranged. Others say that a pagan altar could have been located on this site.

There is one more curious legend associated with this place. They say that here you can meet a kind ghost of an old woman who lives on the territory of the church. It is believed that meeting her brings happiness! According to legend, the woman was a parishioner of the temple and here she prayed for the sins of her suicide son. After death, the spirit of the old woman remained on the territory of the cathedral and protects its parishioners.

5 - Water tower

In Dnipro, on the territory of the National University of Railway Transport, there is an old water tower. There are legends that at one time lovers of mysticism became interested in the tower, and back in the 50s a strange woman loved to come to the building. She constantly wore some kind of incomprehensible attire like a black cloak with a hood that covered her face. The lady stood for hours near the water tower, whispering something. Students spread a rumor that this is a witch who is brought here by an otherworldly force.

Today, almost all the windows of the tower are broken, and the walls are painted with a swastika and signs of Satanists.

6 - Sevastopol Park

A monument to the heroes of the Sevastopol defense was erected on the main alley of the park. During the Great Patriotic War, the cemetery was destroyed and reconstructed in 1956.

A mound with a monument became a monument to those who fell during the defense of Sevastopol. In 1977, the Sevastopol Park was given the status of a memorial. However, during the years of Ukraine's independence, the memorial fell into disrepair.

7 - House on Dzerzhinsky, 13

It is known that the house was built in the 1890s, owned by a wealthy Yekaterinoslav banker, Alexander Ivanovsky. The building was built in the neo-Gothic, neo-Renaissance and neo-baroque styles, which were fashionable for those years. Ominous stories with this house happened after the tragic death of Ivanovsky's wife, and some say that the devil himself is involved in this case.

During the construction of the building, Ivanovsky's wife was just in position. Ironically, the man at this time fell in love with another: for a long time she did not reciprocate, but eventually gave up. Someone says that the mistress of Ivanovsky was almost Sonya Golden Pen herself. The banker's wife found out about the affair and committed suicide. Allegedly in memory of her, the man asked the sculptor to depict the Valkyries over the windows of the mansion, and in memory of the unborn child - the figure of Cupid in a sea shell.

In 2013, a satyr's head disappeared from the roof of the house. They searched for her for several weeks, but not a single fragment was found.

8 - Cinema Krasnogvardeets

The Krasnogvardeets cinema, built in 1957 in the Dnieper, became a harbinger of the real Kino-BUM. This unique stately building has become one of the most popular cinemas in the city. However, with the advent of independence, "Krasnogvardeets" was undeservedly forgotten, and its cinemas were closed forever. Since 2011, a completely new era has begun in the life of the old cinema. On the site of the former Krasnogvardeets cinema, a multifunctional cultural center, the House of Arts, was created.

During the Soviet era, there was an interesting legend about the "Krasnogvardeytsa" about a lady in blue. Allegedly, a woman dressed in all blue also came to the blue hall for late sessions. She loved to sit down with lonely spectators and predict their fate to them. Usually she predicted a quick death to her interlocutors. Rumor has it that it was the ghost of the controller who once worked in the cinema.

9 - Abandoned shooting gallery with columns

Climbing up from the Victory Embankment up to the Rassvet Hotel, you can see an old mansion with classic columns. The building differs from the houses that are located nearby. The doors and windows are tightly boarded up, the stucco molding is crumbling on it, and there are no people around. It is said that this building is the old professor's last gift to his students.

After the death of the professor and his family in 1926, the building was given to the shooting gallery of the military department. And later they wanted to make a small hotel out of a luxurious mansion, but many were against it, because the old professor bequeathed his abode to the university. After a long time, the university won its right to the building. People who live in these outskirts say that they try not to walk near an abandoned shooting gallery in the evenings. Firstly, the place there is deaf and dark, and secondly, there are rumors that sometimes you can see candle flame and translucent silhouettes in the windows.

10 - House with gnomes at Gonchara, 4

An unusual house is hidden on 4 Honchara Street. On it, as a symbol of an irretrievably bygone era, unusual stucco figures remain. Moreover, on the facade of the old building are depicted not Atlanteans or Valkyries, but gnomes. Previously, they had a pickaxe and a hammer in their hands - the symbols of the Masons.

Very little information has been preserved about the building. It is known that it was built in the 19th century and for a long time there was a tenement house that belonged to Stein.

Image
Image

The first thing that comes to mind when looking at the figures of the dwarves on the building is that perhaps they once guarded a treasure. Nevertheless, no one found any chests with gold in the former apartment building. But there is a legend that it was behind one of the gnomes that there was a cache where the map of the underground passages used by the Masons was kept. The key to the cache could be the tools that one of the dwarfs was holding in his hands.

Image

According to legend, the underground passages still exist today. Most likely, this is one of the old collectors from the times of Yekaterinoslav. Sometimes in the area of the house with the gnomes you can hear an incomprehensible rumble and an incomprehensible whisper, which seems to be coming from under the ground.

11 - Subway Ghost Train

Almost everywhere where there is a metro there is a legend about a ghost train. Our city is no exception.

According to the legend, when there are fewer people in the metro, at 3-4 o'clock in the afternoon, you can hear the sound of a passing train that stops at the station and opens its doors, and you can see the barely noticeable silhouette of the arriving train. Some even saw a completely empty driver's cab and curtained windows in all carriages, just like in old-style trains.

Image

There is also a background to this strange phenomenon. Shortly before the Chernobyl disaster, a ghost train was seen at the Solntsevo and Novoukrainka stations of the Kiev railway. In 1991, in the Poltava region, the scientist Vasily Leshchaty jumped on the step of the train and disappeared without a trace.

There is also a famous case that happened in Mexico in 1840. More than 100 people claimed to have arrived by train from Italy, although in those years such a trip was out of the question. All strange people were sent for a psychiatric examination, their further fate is unknown.

12 - Tunnels Floorboards

Few people know that there is an underground river in the Dnieper - Polovitsa. Previously, it flowed out of the lowland where Ozerka is now located.

Image
Image

The source of the river is now in the Krasnopovstanskaya gully. Polovitsa passes through the network of old underground tunnels through the city center. She was redirected to a new sewer, which ends near the intersection of Naberezhnaya and Vladimir Monomakh Street.

At the dawn of history, Yekaterinoslav often suffered from constant floods and flooding of the river, after which it was decided to ferry the river underground.

The underground path stretches under Karl Marx Avenue and goes to the Dnieper near the Church of St. John the Prelate. Today diggers lead excursions on it. They say that in the tunnels sometimes strange lights light up by themselves and something similar to crying is heard.

13 - House on Glinka with Fortuna

The house on Glinki, 12 is lost between the giant shopping malls and a public transport stop. At the very top, there are sculptures of the Greek gods - Fortune and Hermes. The owner of the mansion, Mr. Shabad, asked to install these figures on the facade for a reason. The paddle in the hands of Fortuna was made at the Shabad factory for about 120 years.

Image
Image

The manufacturer asked to be part of the facade decoration in order to demonstrate that his product is of high quality and will not rust even under heavy rains after many years. By the way, the paddle is really well preserved.

It was rumored that metal products at the Shabad plant were produced using a secret technology that made them incredibly durable and resistant to corrosion. Allegedly, Shabad hid the documents on the secret rafting in a cache in the wall of the house. The blade of the oar points to it. The documents have not been found many years later.

Interestingly, in the 90s, part of the building was not used and renovated there. According to the workers, objects often moved by themselves in the house, and once even a wooden table caught fire. Whether this is true or fiction, we no longer know.
