The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) of the US Department of Defense has initiated a project to develop software for robots that will control their behavior in a given situation. According to C4ISRNET, it is assumed that such a revision will significantly improve the attitude of people towards robotic systems.

Robotic systems existing today can have a high degree of autonomy. However, they are unable to act in accordance with moral norms or rules that are considered acceptable in a particular locality or situation.

DARPA researchers are currently collecting data on what behaviors are considered acceptable by people in a particular area and in a particular situation. According to the project manager Reza Ganadan, the data already obtained can be transferred to the level of the algorithm. For example, a robot can be taught to be quiet in a library or theater.

Research on norms of behavior is still in its infancy. Researchers have yet to examine the most common situational, cultural and hierarchical norms of behavior, Ganadan said. How long it may take to collect enough data is not specified.

The first developments on the project, according to DARPA, can be applied in the civilian sphere. For example, voice assistants like Siri can learn to put the phone on silent in a movie theater. Training in the norms of behavior of combat robots will take place not soon, since they will have to act in much more difficult situations.

So, in addition to the generally accepted norms of behavior for a particular locality, military robots will also need to lay knowledge about the rules and customs of warfare, unacceptable actions and rules of warfare. Other details about the project have not yet been disclosed.

In the middle of last year, the US Air Force launched a project to develop a voice assistant for command posts. According to the requirement of the military, this voice assistant should be similar to Siri, Alexa or Google Home. It is assumed that the new system will speed up the processing of information and increase the speed of control over the actions of the air forces.

It should be noted that today there are already some robotic military systems that can operate completely autonomously, including the use of standard weapons. However, the function of using weapons in such systems is not used. The fact is that the use of weapons by robots is practically not stipulated by international laws and customs of warfare.
