Sarmatia was mainly inhabited by two tribes - Antes and Roxolans. The latter built the city of Surozh in 347. BC.

The Sarmatians created a heavily armed cavalry. They clothed themselves and their horses in scaly shells made from horse hooves sawn into plates. Such a shell withstood blows by sword and spear even in close combat. The warrior was armed with a long sword and a spear 4.5m long. The pike was attached to the horse's neck with a wide belt; its lower end is held on the horse's rump by means of a loop. The riders held him with both hands and guided him in the right direction. At a gallop, such a structure acquired incredible penetrating power, punching two people with shields and in armor at once. Such a rider was called a cataphractarium. Built in close formation, this cavalry broke through any formations and, with a massive cavalry strike, had no equal.
