The size of the gas wave is much larger than our galaxy

The discovery was made by scientists working with data that were obtained from the Chandra space X-ray observatory, launched by NASA in 1999. They have discovered a colossal "tsunami" of hot gas, which is moving through the neighboring Perseus cluster with our galaxy. This cluster is so large that next to only one found gas wave, our entire Milky Way galaxy appears to be a dwarf.

NASA scientists believe that the passage of a smaller star cluster billions of years ago significantly disturbed the gas in the Perseus cluster. As a result of this cosmic disturbance, a rotating formation was formed, in which a colossal wave of gas arose.

The dimensions of the wave are believed to be on the order of 200 thousand light years! This, for comparison, is about twice the size of our Milky Way. As for its enormous size, they are a direct result of the strength of the magnetic field of the cluster itself. Over time, the wave will decay and disappear, but the decay period will be long and will stretch over many millions of years.

The Perseus Cluster is 250 million light-years from Earth.
