At the IX Forum "Atomexpo-2017" a truly fantastic nuclear battery was demonstrated, which can operate for fifty years or more.
As explained by Pavel Zaitsev, General Director of FSUE NII NPO Luch, a division of Rosatom, this prototype of a miniature and at the same time nuclear, but, most importantly, safe power supply based on the Ni-63 isotope can revolutionize providing modern mobile devices with electricity.
For example, it can be used not only in portable gadgets of all kinds, but also in medical devices and devices, for example, in a pacemaker, which for this reason does not need to be changed throughout the patient's life.
While the cost of such a battery is prohibitively high, because one gram of Ni-63 isotope costs about 4 thousand dollars, the diamond cell of the battery can even reach a price of 100 thousand dollars, Zaitsev specifies. Therefore, it is too early to talk about the serial production of such power supplies, this is just an experimental sample. But modern technologies are developing and improving very quickly, in the sixties, for example, a data storage device (modern hard disk) of several "meters" (ridiculous capacity by today's standards) weighed more than three tons and also cost tens of thousands of dollars. So the nuclear battery of the future, which will be widely used in all kinds of gadgets and devices, today you can really talk, and not just dream, as some kind of fantastic invention of the future.
By the way, let us say that almost one hundred domestic and foreign companies took part in the IX Forum "Atomexpo-2017". Rosatom demonstrated to its participants not only a nuclear battery, the guests' attention was also riveted to the levitation transport module, a natural scale model of the floating nuclear power plant (a unique floating nuclear power plant), the assembly of the VVER-1200 nuclear reactor vessel and some other novelties.
