By the way, this is an interesting question! Personally, I thought that gasoline can be stored forever. Then I got back to the topic "How to live after the Apocalypse" and in the light of this topic the question was raised, how long after the world apocalypse it will be possible to use gasoline. And then, whatever you look at, there will be hundred-year-old reserves of fuel and will ride.

Why was it possible? Will it work?

Forget useless money, gold and diamonds. These things will become useless junk after the apocalypse. A new kind of money and currency will appear. One of the most popular notions and myths in post-apocalyptic films like Mad Max is that fuel will be the new currency. Remember such a scene in a typical film, how people walk across the planet, where there has been no civilization for a couple of decades, or even hundreds, and find a tank of gasoline, fill it up and drive some kind of "crazy Max" car.

So, it turns out that everything is not so simple …

Gasoline that is stored for a long time undergoes changes that can impair its properties. This is primarily due to the chemical oxidation processes that occur under the influence of air. The storage of gasoline in oil depots is very different from the storage conditions at home, but even the best storage conditions for gasoline cannot completely prevent these processes.

Even if all conditions are met, the shelf life of gasoline cannot exceed 5 years. In addition to chemical changes that reduce the octane number of gasoline, low-boiling hydrocarbons gradually volatilize. This leads to the fact that leaded gasoline loses ethyl bromide, which removes lead from the combustion chamber, as a result of which carbon deposits form in the chamber.

The shelf life of gasoline in a canister that is hermetically sealed depends on the temperature. On average, gasoline can be stored for up to a year. The higher the storage temperature, the shorter this period. It also depends on what material the canister is made of, since some substances, such as copper or tin, contribute to oxidation.

The shelf life of AI 92 gasoline does not exceed one year, because it contains numerous additives that break down quickly enough and the octane number of gasoline drops even when stored in a sealed container and at low temperatures.

Chemical changes that occur during long-term storage of gasoline significantly reduce the octane number of the fuel, while the loss of low-boiling hydrocarbons occurs. When refueling with such fuel, lead carbon deposits will form in the engine combustion chamber, which can lead to changes in engine operation and deterioration of its performance.

Storing gasoline in a plastic canister will not help to increase its shelf life, it will be stored as much as in a metal canister. When poured from a plastic canister, gasoline can ignite spontaneously as the plastic builds up static electricity. Therefore, it is better to use a metal container for storing gasoline.

For a large supply of fuel, barrels for storing gasoline, metal or plastic, are used. Barrels should be opaque, with well-closing caps. Plastic drums must be well protected against static electricity.

Fully filled drums or cans store gasoline better than half-empty containers. There is no oxygen in full containers, so gasoline oxidizes less. Also, in half-empty drums, an explosive vapor-air mixture is formed, which can easily cause an explosion. However, it is unacceptable to fill containers with this product to more than 95%.

So the new currency in the uncivilized future will be something else, like alcohol.
