The US military continues to work on several projects related to laser weapons. A promising technology is not devoid of significant drawbacks, but tests of new developments in the US Army are carried out regularly. Recently in the state of New Mexico at the White Sands training ground, the US military tried to find out how effective laser weapons can be in the fight against unmanned aerial vehicles.

A 30 kilowatt ATHENA (Advanced Test High Energy Asset) laser installation was tested at the test site. She was equipped with a special targeting system. During the tests, she was able to shoot down five unmanned aerial vehicles in flight. The new fiber laser has proven to be effective in the field, causing disorientation and drone failure.

Representatives of the company Lockheed Martin, which funded the development, noted that the tests were carried out according to their calculations and expectations. Previously, the installation was tested on fixed targets - then it also showed good results.

The ATHENA Portable Rig is an experimental development designed to test and demonstrate the latest in laser weapon technology, powered by a new compact generator from Rolls-Royce.
