Scientists from Leiden University have found thousands of rock paintings and inscriptions in the Black Desert in Jordan, which may prove to be proof of the existence of an ancient civilization. Their research will be published in the American Journal of Archeology, summarized on LiveScience.

Despite the fact that now these lands are unsuitable for life, there was once water, trees, animals and people on this territory, whose civilization began to flourish two millennia ago, scientists say. Then the inhabitants of present-day Jordan began to make rock paintings and even inscriptions, using the ancient Arabian Safaitic alphabet. At the moment, scientists have already found thousands of such images.

The Great Hour of geoglyphs are images of animals such as gazelles and lions, the inscriptions are mostly the names of people.

And although scientists have many samples to study, this is not enough, since nothing else is known about the culture of these people and about themselves. In addition, the relief has changed a lot over two thousand years, which makes research even more difficult.
