Scientists from Brigham Young University in the United States have established a link between running and improving memory. Research on this topic is published in the journal Neuroscience.

According to scientists, running reduces the negative effects of chronic stress on the hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for memory.

The researchers conducted an experiment on mice. One group of animals used the wheels for a 4-week period (on average, they ran five kilometers per day), while another group of mice were sedentary. Half of each group was exposed to stressful situations, such as walking on a raised platform or swimming in cold water.

The ability to memorize was studied in all animals, forcing them to go through a maze. It was found that stressed mice with physical activity do the task better than non-joggers. The same advantage was recorded in active mice over inactive mice that were not exposed to stress.

In November 2017, it was reported that scientists from Columbia University in New York concluded that it is possible to reduce the risk of acquiring senile dementia in the case of regular exercise.
