From literature or eyewitness accounts, we know about an amazing phenomenon - when from time to time a person hears voices or music that others do not hear at that moment. These sounds can suggest a solution to some important problem or warn of danger. They are often explained as a consequence of nervous tension - however, such a phenomenon can be explained by the connection with the other world, whose inhabitants come to the aid of people at the right time.
The devil asked to join the orchestra
Historical evidence of this phenomenon has existed since ancient times - and this happened to completely normal people and, as a rule, contributed to their creative activity. In the book "Theagus" the ancient Greek philosopher Plato writes about his teacher Socrates (he, as you know, was an adherent of the presentation of thoughts in oral form and did not leave his own works). Socrates argued that from childhood he was accompanied by some kind of voice, which sometimes gave a sign to refrain from doing something and, as a result, saved the philosopher from many mistakes.
Joan of Arc, according to her, at the age of thirteen, heard the voices of the Archangel Michael and Saint Catherine, who predicted that she was destined to lift the siege from Orleans and drive out the invaders. Jeanne announced this mission only three years later - and at first she was ridiculed, but later, under her leadership, the liberation of Orleans and the defeat of the British really took place.
The 18th century Italian composer Giuseppe Tartini said that he dreamed of a devil who asked to work in the maestro's orchestra. And he picked up a violin to prove his ability to play. The melody bewitched Tartini. In the morning, waking up, he immediately wrote it down from memory. This is how the Devil's Trill sonata appeared.
Lay down on the couch

Inventor Thomas Edison regularly resorted to the help of a mysterious voice. When some problem was not solved, he recalled all the facts known on this topic and lay down on the couch. Soon a voice from the outside was prompting him for a decision.
According to Alexander Griboyedov, the plot of the comedy "Woe from Wit" came to him in a dream. Mozart did not hide the fact that he heard one of his works when he was walking in the garden. Mark Twain's heroes, by his own admission, constantly talked to him.
No fire happened
No less interesting are the cases when a large number of people hear mysterious voices or music at the same time.
In 1909, the Catholic Church canonized St. Clement Hofbauer, a clergyman who preached in Warsaw and Vienna in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. At the same time, documentary evidence of the "devil's obsession" in the form of the voices pursuing him was taken into account. In particular, in 1801 in Warsaw, his sermons to parishioners were often interrupted by screams and children's crying as if from nowhere. Once during a service, someone's voice announced loudly that the temple was burning and everyone needed to be saved. Nevertheless, the priest continued to preach - and the parishioners realized in a few minutes that there was no fire.
In December 1889, the American magazine "Light" spoke about the voice that lives in the Dagg family in the town of Clarendon (Canada). At the request of family members, police officer Percy Woodcock was sent to them. Daggs' adopted daughter Dinah took him to the barn and asked loudly: "Are you here, mister?" Woodcock was amazed to hear the voice of an invisible elderly man in response, who heaped curses on those who came. In the end, it was possible to agree with this voice, and he promised that he would disappear next Sunday. But rumors about what was happening at the Daggs quickly spread around the area, and hundreds of people came here to also listen to the mysterious voice. He answered any questions and knew the details of the life of everyone who tried to talk to him. Then he left the habitat, but evidence of him remained, and there could be no question of any hoax.
Music without musicians
Similar facts may apply to phantom music. At the end of the 19th century, the French journal Annals of Psychological Sciences said that amazing things happened in the castle of Calvados from 1867 to 1893: furniture moving, disappearance and appearance of various objects, spontaneous opening and closing of doors, etc. Among other mysteries, the sound of organ music, which lasted for several hours, attracted attention, while no one was at the instrument.
The English newspaper "Manchester Evening News" in 1968 published an article about the melodies of the flute, which are heard in one of the houses on Peter Street. For a long time, anyone could hear them. And in 1974, the London newspaper News of the World published an article about a house on Humber Avenue in Coventry, where the piano was often played - even though no one was playing on it.
Hallucinations or communication with space?
How can you explain the sound of phantom voices and music? The simplest explanation - that these are just isolated or collective hallucinations - hardly has a right to exist. Of course, in some cases, the sound of phantom voices and music may be the result of a mental disorder. But how to explain that voices warning us or prompting a way out of a situation have been heard by the overwhelming majority of people at least once in their life? Are they all insane (including Socrates or Mozart)?
It is clear that explanations must be sought in another area.
Researchers agree on only one thing: all these phenomena do not represent something uniform, they are different, in fact, and are due to different reasons.
In cases of creative cues, psychiatrists talk about the work of the subconscious. That is, the voice or music from the outside is nothing more than the result of an imperceptible but intense activity of our brain. A person knows that the solution to a problem is somewhere nearby, and the subconscious, regardless of our will, is looking for it. In this case, Edison's example is very indicative: to activate the work of the subconscious, the inventor relaxed the body. This is also why many of these clues come in dreams.
Another thing is when such voices warn about what to expect in the future (examples of Socrates, Joan of Arc, or Abraham Lincoln). Surely each of us had something like this - when someone or something warned against wrong actions. This can be called a premonition or intuition - and the mechanism of such a mental process has not yet been completely studied. There are hundreds of thousands of evidences that someone has heard the warning voices, and many paranormal researchers associate them with the other world, whose inhabitants guard those close to them. But there is still no scientific explanation for this phenomenon.
There are many mysteries in human nature, and phantom voices and music are one of its mysteries. Perhaps this is a manifestation of communication with the cosmos or the higher mind?
