When the first wave of logging swept through the old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest in the second half of the 19th century, some people discovered dark, dense jungle as ideal places to settle. And these daredevils have definitely left their mark on history.

They cut off massive logs and dumped them to float down the river to the sawmills. Good timber could make good money. Scarred landscapes filled with scraps and tree stumps became the backdrop to this clearing. There were a lot of stumps and they reached truly amazing sizes. Many of them were very tall, but they were not suitable as lumber, as they swelled in water and lost their properties.

As a result, huge areas of land were littered with debris, and giant remains of trees still rose from the soil. The local soil was well suited for agricultural purposes, but clearing it would have meant hard labor. Subsequent waves of immigrants began to free the local land for gardens and fields, but they still found use for some stumps. After erecting a roof, doors or gates, the farmers put pigs, calves and birds in them. And some farmers even settled in such premises themselves.
