The devices that truly improved human life - such as electricity, the telephone, and the plane - were created by people who passionately believe that their inventions will make the world a better place. It looks like Troy Reed from Tulsa, Oklahoma is that kind of person. Reed invented and patented an engine that consumes no fuel and does not emit harmful gases. It's powerful enough to run a 7000 watt generator.

Reed, 57, also invented a car called the Surge, which uses his new technology. Unlike a conventional electric car, Reed's Surge does not need to be plugged in to recharge. The car recharges while driving on the highway at speeds up to 85 mph.

The idea for this technology came to Reed back in 1959, when he was working as a machinist, earning 70 cents an hour. Thirty years later, in 1989, he was able to realize those dreams by turning the crank that set Reed's first magnetic motor in motion. This prototype was two meters high, weighed over 220 kg, had four moving parts and powered a 500 W generator.

Since then, Reed has upgraded his engine. It is now powered by a car battery (which is recharged by a generator), is 50cm high, weighs less than 90kg, has one moving part and operates with a 7000W generator.

The motor uses a horizontal shaft with multiple magnets. Above the shaft are four vertical, spring-loaded pistons with a magnet at the end closest to the shaft. As the handle rotates, the horizontal shaft rotates, and the spring-loaded magnetic pistons move up and down, causing the shaft and magnetic force field to move. Once the shaft is set in motion, it continues to rotate until the brake is applied.

Instead of moving pistons, the latest engine uses an electronic system and stationary magnets to start and control the movement of the shaft. Consequently, the only moving part of the motor is the horizontal shaft. In the current model, the shaft spins in bearings, but Reed said the production model would not have bearings. Instead, the shaft will be magnetically suspended inside the motor housing.

If Reed's engine works as well as he says it is a pretty amazing technological breakthrough. This means that a person can live wherever he wants, with all the amenities, and he will never have to pay for electricity. You can drive to work or anywhere else without consuming fuel. And best of all: you can do these things without polluting the environment.
