In the middle of the 20th century, sailors of the fleets of different countries had to face a strange phenomenon - the appearance of mysterious humanoid creatures in the ocean depths. As long as these stories were retold orally, they did not receive much importance. But then the phenomenon, clearly contradicting traditional science, acquired such a scale that it was no longer possible to ignore it.

Crews of ships and submarines increasingly reported that they observed unidentified objects in various parts of the oceans. These meetings were preceded by strange sounds recorded by hydroacoustics. The signals surprisingly resembled the croaking of frogs, so the unidentified objects were called Quakers. Initially, this name was, in fact, popular, but gradually it migrated to official documents containing information about incomprehensible objects.

It soon became clear that people had met with the mysterious Quakers before. It turned out that the Americans and the British had already dealt with them during World War II. At that time, the Allied army had more advanced hydroacoustic equipment than the German army. During the battles in the Atlantic, the technique recorded strange sounds from the depths of the water. The Americans and the British decided that the Germans had a new weapon, which initially caused real panic. As a result, the data on these cases were classified.

Soviet sailors began observing Quakers around the early 1950s, when they had 611 and 613 submarines at their disposal. Because these submarines had better acoustic systems, they could pick up sounds that were not available to previous specialists. Here is the story of the commander of the Northern Fleet submarine, one of the eyewitnesses of the meeting with the Quakers: “We go out into the Norwegian Sea, and suddenly an acoustician hears that we are surrounded by a certain enemy under water, and he is acting very energetically: he is actively maneuvering around vertically and horizontally, sounds are unknown to us, and we cannot classify them. Everyone is shocked. Upon returning to the base, we, the commanders, report on what happened. After that, the command itself is in shock. The question is: what will science say? And science is silent, because it itself does not understand anything …"

Why have these strange signals attracted such close attention, because from the ocean depths many other equally mysterious sounds are heard? The fact is that they were radically different from other underwater noise. Eyewitnesses claim that the impression was that unknown sources were acting quite deliberately, as if trying to establish contact with the sailors. At the same time, the mysterious creatures were particularly sensitive to sonar signals from boats. After a while the Quakers sailed away, but then returned again.

Sailors from Russian submarines said that these creatures sailed alongside, until the submarines left any area, then they gave a farewell signal and disappeared. No aggression on their part was observed, they seemed to demonstrate their peacefulness. And yet the commanders feared the appearance of mysterious underwater objects. After all, they unexpectedly crossed the path of the submarine, and if the submarine changed course, then the unidentified object crossed it again. Despite the fact that in all their years of observing the Quakers they had never attempted an attack, the submarine crews were in constant tension.

Not only submarines had to deal with mysterious phenomena. The crews of the surface ships also spoke of some strange incidents. For example, while conducting oceanographic studies in the Arabian Sea with the vessel "Vladimir Vorobiev", the team once noticed a luminous white spot rotating counterclockwise around the ship. Gradually, it fell into eight equal parts. The echo sounder measured the depth under the ship - it was 170 m, and under the keel of the ship at a depth of about 20 m there was an unknown mass, from which there was a light vibrating sound.

To solve the problem with the Quakers, the commander of the Northern Fleet, Admiral G. M. Yegorov, created a special group headed by the chief of staff. The group also included A. Smolovsky, the head of the analytical department, who later wrote a number of serious works devoted to the Quakers. There were ample reasons for such a group, given the great uproar around UFOs in the 1960s. There have been many reports of unidentified underwater objects (NGOs).

For the Soviet navy, the problem was very urgent. The naval command was extremely skeptical about reports of various anomalous phenomena and did not even welcome talk about unknown signals. However, there were more and more messages, and it was already impossible not to report them. The then Minister of Defense, Marshal A. Grechko, also ordered the creation of a special group under the intelligence department, which included several officers. Their task was to study, systematize and analyze all the unusual phenomena that occur in ocean waters and can be dangerous for ships.

The group took on an incredibly cumbersome job as they had to travel to fleets and collect information in some way related to NGOs. In addition, several expeditions were organized in order to detect mysterious signals in the water. However, as it turned out, there was still some experience: sailors from other states also met with the Quakers. The Americans especially had a lot of testimonies about meetings with them.

After all the high-profile events, American experts staged a real hunt for NGOs and Quakers. The US Air Force used the most advanced global sonar tracking system (SOSUS), which was intended to search for Soviet nuclear submarines. The system covered part of the Pacific Ocean and the entire Atlantic. In the 1960s, the first parts of the SOSUS were installed, and in 1991, civilian scientists, in particular the leading expert in the field of acoustic signals of the ocean, Professor K. Fox, were allowed to use the system. At a depth of several hundred meters, listening posts were located, and they could recognize most of the sounds, for example, the singing of whales, the friction of icebergs on the ocean floor, the rumble of submarine propellers, and underwater earthquakes.

In addition to completely natural sounds, SOSUS also picked up unknown signals. With the help of the hydroacoustic system, it was possible to establish that the broadcasting of unknown sources spreads practically over the entire ocean. Long waves are recorded by sensors located in different parts of the planet. These are mainly low-frequency waves, reminiscent of the sounds made by working equipment. The signals were recorded on a tape recorder and played at an increased speed. It turned out that they are quite distinguishable for human hearing. In addition, it turned out that there are several different types of signals, each of which has its own characteristics. The researchers divided them into "whistle", "howl", "train" and "braking".

Professor Fox describes some of the sounds as follows: “Get at least 'braking.' This is a sound similar to the one that makes the landing plane, first appeared in the nineties in the Pacific Ocean. Now it has moved to the Atlantic. The source is located far from hydrophones, and we cannot detect it."

From 1991 to 1994, the system recorded a constant signal called an upward signal. It sounded like meaningful. Then he suddenly disappeared. A few years later, it was again recorded, and the signal became stronger and more diverse. Today, US Navy experts and civilian scientists are conducting research in parallel, but so far neither one nor the other can understand the nature of the signal. They are unable to establish to whom it belongs and to whom it is addressed. The signal source seems to be deliberately located far from the hydrophones and is constantly moving. Such sources of sounds are called NZO - unidentified sound objects.

Who produces these sounds: unknown sea animals, representatives of extraterrestrial civilizations or a mysterious underwater race?

I must say that back in March 1966, long-range underwater communications were tested in the United States. A kilometer long antenna was laid along the continental shelf. A ship went out to sea, to the bottom of which the locators lowered down were attached. In the course of the experiment, anomalous events began. First, they caught the signal, then something similar to its repetition, as if it were an echo, then mysterious, as if coded messages began to be heard. The experiment was carried out several more times, constantly obtaining similar data.

Colonel Alex Sanders participated in these experiments, who noted that it was like "someone in the depths, took our signal, imitated it in order to attract our attention, and then began to transmit his message on the same wavelength." It was possible to detect the source of the signal, which was located at a depth of 8000 m in an almost unexplored area of the Atlantic Ocean. But since scientists could not figure out the oddities of the noise, it was decided to terminate the experiment, calling it unsuccessful.

Only in 1996 were the records obtained during that experiment entered into the most advanced computers of the Pentagon. The US Navy cryptographers never released the data obtained from the decryption of the records. However, military oceanographers began to actively study the bottom in the area of the Atlantic Ocean, from where the sounds came. Also, the US military was involved in the development of the latest methods of long-distance underwater communications. Professor K. Fox described the situation as follows: "No one really knows what can be heard from underwater creatures."

It is also strange that unidentified objects are capable of developing incredibly high speed. From the Gulf of Siam and the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Malacca and the South China Sea, for over 100 years, there have been reports from merchant and military vessels about glowing lights and strange objects under water. In the past few years, strange sounds have been increasingly heard in one of the deepest places in the oceans - the Mindanao underwater canyon, which is 9,000 meters deep. To investigate the phenomenon, an expedition, including researchers and experts from the National Directorate of the study of the ocean and the atmosphere of the United States.

Great hopes are pinned on the expedition. But talk about it has been going on for many years, but it still won't take place. Perhaps it was canceled, but it is also possible that it took place, but the data obtained as a result of the research was hidden. However, the press still leaked information that even in the prehistoric era, a cetacean zeglodon lived in the ocean at great depths - a snake-like creature, probably having sound transmission organs, like whales or dolphins. Perhaps, somewhere in the ocean, a descendant of this animal still lives, which makes those same mysterious sounds.

Interestingly, all the data obtained by US scientists on this topic was classified and sent to the military archive. The reasons can only be guessed at.
