There is an opinion that the world famous writer was buried alive. However, this rumor partly belonged to Nikolai Vasilyevich himself, who at a certain period of his life was subject to fainting and somnambulistic states. He sincerely worried that one of his next seizures could be perceived as death, because of which the writer would simply be put in a coffin alive.
What was found at autopsy
When 79 years passed after the death of Nikolai Vasilyevich, his grave was opened in order to transfer the remains from the closed Danilov Monastery to the Novodevichy cemetery. The thing is that on the site of the former necropolis they decided to build a colony for juvenile offenders.
The people present at the autopsy shuddered with horror. The head of Nikolai Vasilievich rested on its side, and it lay separately from the skeleton. The coffin itself was somehow torn to shreds, as if someone had worked with claws from inside the coffin. But experts don't believe that the myth of a writer being buried alive is indeed true.

In the grave, the body decomposes at a good rate. A couple of years pass, and only bones remain of it, which are gradually separated from each other. Experts believe that over 79 years, both the fibers of the coffin and its upholstery could be damaged.
Changes have occurred with them - rotting, decomposition into parts, so it is not possible to establish the fact of scratching with claws. The sculptor Ramazanov claimed that before the burial of the writer he took off his death mask. At that moment, he saw on the face of Nikolai Vasilyevich the process of tissue decomposition.
But if everything is more or less clear with burial alive, the fact of the separation of the writer's head from his body remains unsolved. Pagan tribes that lived in antiquity buried people in dismembered form. In the 19th century, such a ritual was performed only by people who were afraid of the sorcerer's revenge.
The personality of the writer is really covered with mystical darkness - according to some, he used magic, witchcraft, mysticism. Therefore, it is not surprising that the head was separate from the writer's body. However, there was another version - it was not at all in the coffin. According to the assumption, someone stole the skull of Nikolai Vasilyevich from the grave.
