A 37-year-old Indian woman was diagnosed with the rarest disease - Gorham's disease. In the entire history, doctors have registered less than 70 cases of the disease. Because of the anomaly, a woman can easily bend her arm 180 degrees.
A 37-year-old resident of the city of Pondicherry in southeastern India, whose name has not been disclosed, went to a local hospital with complaints of pain in her left shoulder. She told the doctors that she had had shoulder discomfort for three months and had difficulty moving her arm.
Experts from the Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences examined the woman's hand and noticed that her shoulder was suspiciously soft. Moreover, the patient could easily bend her elbow in the opposite direction.
The x-rays revealed that the woman's humeral head - the part of the bone that connects the collarbone and shoulder - had simply disappeared. The patient also underwent magnetic resonance imaging, which showed that her humerus was disappearing in the same way. An Indian woman was diagnosed with a rare disease - Gorham's disease.
The woman refused operations, fearing to become disabled, and instead decided to do gymnastics to strengthen the shoulder. Within two years of her diagnosis, the Indian woman's illness had not progressed, and there was no longer a need for regular doctor visits.
Gorham's disease, also known as vanishing bone disease, is a massive proliferation of blood vessels that can replace and destroy bone tissue. Less than 70 reported cases have been reported in the medical literature.
