They hope to find untold treasures in the tunnels in the south of Moldova. All nearby villages around Cahul are connected by tunnels. Another underground tunnel was discovered in Cahul. The length of the tunnel is 22 meters. This is not the first find. Underground passages were found during the reconstruction of the local theater. The mayor's office of the southern city has allocated 30 thousand lei for archaeological excavations. Historians believe that the underground passages were laid two centuries ago. Experts are trying to establish their purpose.

- In general, the system of tunnels, of course, is older than the part that was found under the theater, but you need to understand that old, abandoned tunnels were periodically opened, some were restored and used for various purposes, new ones were completed, - said the Kagulchanin, Dr. Anatoly Malkov.

According to him, the tunnel systems are generally identical and typical for many cities in our zone (Odessa, Izmail, Bolgrad, Cahul, Leovo, Isakcha, Galats).

- Moreover, they are related! There is information about the tunnels under the Prut and even under the Danube. For example, the junction of the tunnels in the village of Moskovoy, Kagulsky District, has been used as a collective farm warehouse-basement since the post-war period, and branches outgoing from it towards Kagul, Bolgrad and God knows where, were walled up due to fear of mining. It is no secret that in Cahul there are already many owners of private houses, who stumbled upon such basements during the construction of houses, acted in the same way - they completed the entrance and ventilation, cleaned 20-30 meters of the tunnel, blocking the branches, said Anatoly Malkov.

He also drew attention to the fact that, despite their considerable age, the tunnels retained good waterproofing, the temperature in them is naturally maintained at about 14 degrees, which makes them very attractive for storing wines.

- As for the hopes for the untold treasures of the Ottoman Empire, I think I will disappoint many. The only information about a more or less serious find, more than 10 years ago, relates to the discovery in one of the tunnels, in my opinion, 2-3 kg of 200 lei silver coins of Romania in 1942, under the former house of a Romanian priest.

Perhaps there are legends about the treasures, but one must understand that if there were, then, of course, in the area of such large and strategically important cities, such as Issakcha and Izmail, - he believes.

Anatoly Malkov stressed that it is dangerous to descend into the tunnels. There is a risk of collapse, hypoxia, possibly methane accumulation.

- The first signs of poisoning are dizziness, rapid breathing, and poor coordination of movements. The person feels a sudden loss of strength and may fall, the doctor warned.
