Thornwood Castle has long enjoyed a reputation as a luxurious haunted castle, which was carefully and carefully maintained by its previous owners. However, the new owners of the castle are not too happy about this role. The history of Thornwood Castle began in 1911, when Chester Thorne began its construction on the site where an old 15th century English house was once located.
The manor turned out to be truly majestic, and its appearance adds the building to the number of American castles. At the end of construction, Thornwood Castle reached 27,000 square feet. The building hid 54 rooms, including 22 bathrooms. The structure was surrounded by 35 acres of land, eventually transformed into magnificent English gardens, decorated with elegant statues. At their heart is the elegant secret pool garden, designed by the famous architects, the Olmsted brothers.
The house was used as the seat of the Thorn family. After the death of the head of the family, he was inherited by his daughter Anna with strict instructions never to part with the beautiful property. But Anna did not obey her father, quickly sold the castle to the developer, who did not waste time on legal maneuvering through the labyrinths of the will. Thornwood is now a hotel (a bed and breakfast to be precise).
The castle is a very popular destination for ghost hunters. While some guests reported seeing ghosts, rumors of supernatural residents most likely arose after the estate appeared in Stephen King's screenplay, Red Rose, in which he starred (House, Not King) a devilish mansion that kills everyone who enters it. He later appeared on the screens again in the sequel "Diary of Helena Rimbauer". It was after the release of these two horror films that eerie stories of the paranormal in this castle began to arise.

The couple who previously owned the castle hotel ran it the way any enterprising business owner would. But Thornwood changed hands again, and suddenly his story completely changed. The new owners decided to bet on the romantic side, creating the legend that Thorne built the house and presented it to his precious bride, Anna, as proof of his love. They called the castle "The House That Love Built" and did everything they could to ensure that no one else would think of ghosts.
Outraged, paranormal bloggers denounced the new owners for trying to erase the mansion's true history and only chuckled at the fact that ghosts were no longer mentioned in any of the hotel's descriptions, except for one line in the most asked questions section. "Are there ghosts at Thornwood Castle?" Is the question. “Only in movies,” the owners reply, followed by a smiley face.
Thornwood Castle is an official historic site. It can be rented for special occasions and weddings, and it also functions as a hotel. Thornwood is privately owned, so to visit it you either need to book a room there or plan a holiday.
