The scientists' work argues that there is a statistically significant relationship between cardiovascular disorders and mortality in patients with COVID-19.
"Problems with the heart and blood vessels were characteristic for every fifth patient from Wuhan, which may explain the high mortality rate during hospitalization," the experts say.
Scientists note that COVID-19 in patients with cardiovascular diseases was much more difficult than in others. In particular, people with heart disease were ten times more likely to develop severe pneumonia.
Scientists see the reason for this in the work of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) 2. Experts came to similar conclusions after analyzing the anamnesis of 400 patients with COVID-19 from Wuhan, observed from January 20 to March 10.
In March, the Journal of Travel Medicine published an article claiming that taking ACE inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers, which is recommended, in particular, for elderly people with cardiovascular diseases, increases the likelihood of these individuals being infected with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
