RU - On Thursday, the Strategic Rocket Forces carried out a successful test launch of an RS-12M Topol intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) from the Kapustin Yar test site in the Astrakhan region. “The training warhead of the missile hit a conventional target at the Sary-Shagan training ground (Republic of Kazakhstan) with a given accuracy,” Colonel Vadim Koval, an official representative of the press service and information department of the Russian Defense Ministry on Strategic Missile Forces, told Interfax-AVN.
According to him, the launch was carried out with the aim of "confirming the stability of the main flight characteristics of missiles of this class during the extended service life, working out measuring instruments of various types of measuring complexes in the interests of the Armed Forces, the next test of ICBM combat equipment."
During the test, "information was also received, which will subsequently be used in the interests of developing effective means of overcoming missile defense (ABM)," V. Koval noted.
A promising group of Russian ballistic missiles will have to be equipped with these means of overcoming missile defense, the representative of the Strategic Missile Forces emphasized.
