Artificial intelligence is waiting for us around the corner.

Computer creators are trying to electronically replicate the human brain, and they are close to creating a "living computer" - writes express.co.uk

Engineers at the University of Massachusetts are developing microprocessors that mimic biological synapses - nerve cells that carry messages through the human body.

The science fiction-style project is being undertaken by Joshua Yang and Kwangfei Xia, professors of electrical and computer engineering at the US College.

Their work focuses heavily on memristors, a computer component that could change science forever, shifting focus from electronics to Ionics.

Ionic, unlike electronics, does not depend on the power source. It essentially has a memory, so even if such a computer loses power, it can remember what it did before and continue the action.

This means that computers in the near future can be turned on and off like a light bulb without losing any data or files in the process.

Various researchers and developers, including Mr. Yang and Mr. Xia, are now racing to be the first to use this technology and use it to create the next generation of computers.

Professor Jennifer Rapp said: “I think the race continues. There is a strong driving force, but at the same time, it is very important that there are players like HP because they want to go to the market and show everyone that this is real.”

Mr. Yang and Mr. Xia explained that the new type of device is capable of performing neuromorphic calculations, thereby emulating biological processes.
