On the east coast of England in Lincolnshire, three sperm whales washed ashore. Local services removed the carcasses of the sea giants using excavators and bulldozers.
The operation to remove the bodies of the dead animals to landfills in Oxfordshire and Sheffield took five hours. Each mammal weighed about 30 tons. It took 14 people and several pieces of equipment to clean the beach.
Sperm whales threw themselves ashore, presumably over the weekend, when the bodies of animals were discovered by local residents. By the way, emergency services have forbidden citizens to approach the carcasses of sperm whales after one of them practically exploded from gases accumulated in the body.
In mid-January, 12 sperm whales in the North Sea washed ashore on beaches in Germany and the Netherlands. Animal carcasses have been found on the Dutch island of Texel and the German islands of Wangerooge and Helgoland. The mass of males of the found sperm whales reached 60 tons, the mass of females - 15 tons.
As experts noted, the animals simply got lost in the shallow waters of the North Sea. Sperm whales live several thousand meters under water. The North Sea is an extremely dangerous body of water for sperm whales due to its shallow depth.
