In Italy, archaeologists have discovered the skeleton of a 13-year-old girl who was buried as a witch in the Middle Ages. The experts came to this conclusion because her body was burned and laid face down in the grave, according to the Secolo XIX edition.
It is known that the skeleton was discovered by a group of researchers from the Pontifical Institute of Christian Archeology in the Vatican in the San Calochero complex in the city of Albergo on the territory of an ancient church of the 5th-6th centuries. Presumably, it was finally abandoned in 1593, and the burial dates back to the early Middle Ages.
Experts note that such burials are very rare at the moment, as well as other unusual methods of burial (when the victim was decapitated, a brick or stone was put in her mouth, and dismembered). Such methods of burial testified to the rejection of a person during life. Ancient legends say that such burials will not allow the dead to "rise from the grave."
According to researchers, the girl could be considered a witch because of her sickly appearance. The study of the remains indicates that the girl suffered from scurvy, and could also suffer from epilepsy.
