Large and well-preserved Neolithic settlement discovered by a farmer off Scale Bay on the west coast of Mainland Island, Orkney, Scotland.
Consists of 8 houses, united in blocks, which were inhabited during the period approximately 3100-2500. BC e.
Nothing is known about the builders of this complex. The inscriptions found on the archaeological site could not be compared with any previously known language and alphabet. Scientists draw a parallel with the symbols of the futark, as well as ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.
Many of the drawings in Skara Bray have astronomical significance and are associated with the lunar calendar, the solar system, the equinox, and the signs of the zodiac.
The degree of preservation is such that the monument is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
