On the eve of the impending opposition of Mars, NASA research teams presented a series of studies of the morphology of Mars revealed in the images obtained with the HiRISE detector of the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Collectively, these works are presented in a separate thematic issue of the Icarus magazine.

A wide variety of morphologies of Mars, including entire complexes with anthropormorphic and stereometrically regular structures, revealed with the beginning of spacecraft research on the Red Planet, has attracted unremitting attention.

Interest in the morphology of Mars is not least supported by the discovery of convincing markers of the existence of organic life on the planet today - for example, methane.

The most striking images of the first released are probably, together with the editors of Space magazine, images of "groves" of tree-like structures in the snow-capped hills.

Treelike structures are arranged in groups resembling "groves" or artificial roadside "plantings", and within each group are similar in size, shape - and orientation.

The parallel arrangement of treelike structures at equal distances from each other forces us to be wary of the explanation proposed by NASA specialists as flows from dark basalt sand that appear on the surface due to the processes of ice sublimation from carbon dioxide.

NASA scientists also pay attention to and analyze the strange shapes of the sand dunes of Mars, characteristic of Mars branched formations, which have received the code name "spiders" (spiders, "spiders"), mud volcanoes - and much more.
